By accident, I ended up converting a lossy DNG to a lossy DNG. The result of this second conversion was a file that is exactly the same size as the prior lossy DNG. From this I am concluding that Lightroom is smart enough not to try to reconvert a DNG that is already lossy (thus avoiding the issue that occurs when a JPEG is repeatedly opened and compressed) .
