I'd really like it if I were able to specify how much to sliders moved by when I use the arrow keys or the mouse wheel in the develop module. I like to use my mouse wheel but the incremental settings when you click and use the mouse wheel make no sense (they're huge!) and you can't hover and use the mouse wheel like you can with the arrow keys. Being able to specify smaller amounts when using the mouse wheel would speed up my workflow dramatically.

I'd also love to be able to change the order of the panels in the develop module so they better suit my personal workflow.

Welcome Gordon, please take a moment to fill in your signature in the UserCP at the top left of the page.
You can fill out a feature request from here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
The better you put a case the more possibility of it being considered.

That's a neat idea Gordon. I rarely use the mouse wheel, but I could see a number of people being interested in such a feature. I wonder if there's software that will program the mouse wheel.....

I use a Griffin Powermate to do much the same thing, and as it is programmable, I've got it set to send arrow keystrokes as I turn, so it goes in the increments while hovering.

I've got a Griffin Powermate as well, and I've never had much luck with it on XP. It sort of works OK, sometimes, when it works. It's forever disconnecting, and forgetting it's per application settings.

Victoria and I discussed this on another forum some time ago, and I'd love to use it for LR, but it's just frustratingly unreliable. So I can't recommend it for XP.

I think Griffin is principally an Apple developer and that probably explains it.

I've always felt that the slider interface was a little too coarse for my taste on Windows, but the Mac folks seem quite happy. Anybody running both systems care to comment?

True, it's a while since I used the windows version. The Mac software works pretty well.

On the mouse wheel, are you talking about its effect on the sliders when using the Targeted Adjustment Tool? That's the only slider effect I'm aware of in Develop. I find that if I move the wheel slowly, I can easily do one point at a time, while if I move it quickly I can get all the way to the end of the slider quite quickly.

(I'm using an Apple Mighty Mouse (Wired) on a Mac. I wonder if there's some operating system preference that would affect the scroll wheel rate.)

Mark, System Prefs/ Mouse scrolling speed. Don't have my MM hooked up at the moment, but that should help.

On OSX the is USBOverdrive Shareware controller that might help here, too.

Mark, clearly I don't understand what you're trying to say, because every single control in Develop is a slider. On XP you can move every one by clicking the thumb and scrolling the mouse wheel. The adjustment is +/-'.25 on Exposure and +/-3 points on any '-1''% slider.

By hovering over the thumb, you can use up and down arrows, Exposure is the same, '-1''s go by 5's, mouse wheel scrolls the panels.

By hovering over the numeric entry box, you can use up and down arrows, Exposure is by '.1 and '-1''s are by 5's. Mouse wheel scrolls the panels.

By single clicking the numeric entry, up and down arrows, change Exposure by '.1 and '-1''s by 1s, mouse wheel scrolls the panel.

Ctrl/Alt/Shift keys don't seem to have any effect.

On TATs, I agree, the mouse wheel provides an extremely subtle effect.
(TAT= Targeted Adjustment Tool)

Is there a reference that summarizes all these in one place?

Interesting, Brad -- I'm not sure what you mean by "clicking the thumb", but I can't find any way to make the scroll wheel affect the sliders except when using the TAT (on the Mac, that is). It just scrolls the panel vertically, and has no effect horizontally.

Also, on the Mac, the Shift and Option (Alt) keys affect the magnitude of the changes made by the arrow keys (Shift for larger increments, Option for smaller). But the modifier keys have no effect on the scroll wheel.

The rest is as you describe.

The "thumb" is the actual sliding button, if you were sitting at an audio mixing board, it's the part you would grab with your thumb and forefinger to provide "MORE Cowbell!". I believe that is its official name in a Windows scroll bar. Anyway, slider probably is a better term. (I think it actually comes from an ancient rolodex device which had a sliding aphabetical selector that you operated with your thumb.)

On my XP implementation, clicking the slider button, enables a fairly coarse mouse wheel adjustment, which is unaffected by ctrl/alt/shift keys. Anything else, and the mouse wheel just scrolls the panel track.

Huh, here's something I just discovered with the Up/Down arrow method: when clicking the slider, the modifier keys don't do anything. When hovering over the slider, they work as you describe, Shift for bigger change, Alt for smaller. When using the numeric entry box, they work as I described earlier.

I wonder if the Mac's lack of scroll wheel operation should be filed as a bug?

We had this conversation back mid-June last year Brad. I don't remember ever filing it though - did you?

Yeah, go for it. I could see it coming in handy.

In Windows there are two settings; one based on hovering over the appropriate slider and one by clicking on it. If you click, for example, on the temp slider you can use either the mouse wheel OR the arrow keys and get a movement of 312 units (312??? who thought of 312 being usefull? Or 9 units for saturation, 3 for blacks or 9 for tint. They are waaay to big for me to find them usefull). If you hover your mouse over the same control but don't click you get a movement of 5' units. The mouse wheel does not work on hover mode. Moving your hand around the keyboard is far slower for me than using the mouse wheel.

While I could live with the addition of being able to use the mouse wheel in smaller incriments while hovering I would much prefer being able to have access to and change the amounts to suit my workflow.

I'll put in a feature request

Gordon

Just a passing thought Gordon - are the increments affected by the scrolling speed you have set in mouse preferences?

No, I tried that. Mind you I'm only using the Native Vista settings. Not aftermarket software. I've also tried different mice. Bluetooth, USB, no difference. It's not essential, but it sure would be useful.

Just trying to close the loop here -- we have confirmation today that this is by design. On the Mac, controls don't normally get focus the way they do on Windows.
