Hello, I'm new to the forum and just set up Lightroom.

I just upgraded my laptop to CS4 and LR2 with Mac 1'.6 OS on a Macbookpro. I decided to hold off on Nikon NX2 because Nikon doesn't seem to want to update to OS changes fast enough. Anyway, I have noticed two issues.

I was previously downloading my Nikon D3'' files to Iphoto and saving two versions NEF (raw) and med. quality Jpegs. This was my temporary solution to editing images until I choose set up.

1) Anyway, while CS4 bridge reads and opens all of my files, LR will not read my NEF files already stored in my hard drive ( it does read new files downloaded from my D3''). It tells me the file extension is unsupported. Is their a way I can read these files on LR, it reads my old D6' NEF files no problem?

2) If not, what should I convert the files to, so I can catalog them in LR.

Update to LR 2.5 from the Help menu first.

Done, I updated to 2.5 and camera Raw 5.5 earlier this evening. I also noticed another issue, LR will not read hi-res Jpegs saved in Iphoto either. So at this point it appears the only way I can convert them is thru bridge which reads them all no issue. I find that odd. CS4 Bridge reads all the photo files in my hard drive no problem, but LR refuses to read any high quality D3'' files that were pre-processed in Iphoto wether Jpeg or Raw. I wonder if it will read Tiffs?

The frustration is I now have to save and convert these files (if I want to catalog them thru LR) in CS4, weird.

Most strange but then again iPhoto or Picasa they do strange things!!So the NEF's open fine in CS4/ACR? If so they should open import to LR... mmmm....Can you email me one of your files to: [email protected] please.

Done, the weird thing is LR has no issues with any of my D7' files which were processed the same way. And all my low res Jpegs from the D3'' process fine, but the NEF's an hi-res Jpegs are a no go. If I import from CS4 can I catalog them as .dng's?

Thanks Steve........And so easy!! The file renaming done in iPhoto has introduced characters into the name that are illegal in LR. I'm sure it's the "/"So what I suggest you do is change the "/" to either a "-" or "."...You can do this in Bridge.I suggest you look at your whole file naming system as the type has no apparent consistency.I use GW2''9'925- 12345.dng.
GW is my initials, then the date taken then a sequence number starting at ''''1 each year. This is easy to apply on import and ensures no duplicates unless I stuff up somewhere!!

Changing the file name worked here, no import to with original name and import with new name. Try that out.

As I said you can do that fairly easily in Bridge but consider your whole file naming system first. I know, I've had to rename the majority of my older files!! :icon_lol:
