Unless I'm missing it, there is currently no way to initiate an instant backup. I have Lightroom set to backup once a day, but sometimes want to do it more often.

change your catalog preference to backup every time lightroom starts. Then when you want to perform a backup, perhaps after a few hours work simply relaunch the catalog.
With a shortcut on the desktop to the catalog, not the application you can achieve this in 2 clicks. 1 to close the app and one to open the catalog.
Ok so technically the second one is a double click but I think its about as fast as you can get on a PC.
Mac users simply go to the File menu and select open recent. Even though you will be selecting the one that is currently open it will relaunch.
Cool. Especially if you have done a few hours work and get all worried.
