Since getting the 5D mark 2 I find it takes 5' secs for LR 2.3 to render high quality previews

Do I need a new (faster) computer?

With or without local adjustments?

But, erm, yes, it would help.

No adjustments at all:cry::cry::cry:

I know 21MP makes big files but it does take more than twice the time it took to open the 12MP file sof the 5D mk 1

darn I didnt think Id have to get a new comp so soon!

I was sorta hoping there might be some other reason for the bottleneck apart from the computer:shock:
Anyone else ona similar set up find it takes this long (I'm expecting the amswer in the affirmative)?

And 2.3 should prove significantly better than 2.2 for this as well, unless the bottleneck you're facing is purely hardware.

that's what I hope to get some feedback on....;)

Ok, run through your whole system for us...

Where are files - internal/external/what kind of external?
Running LR in 32-bit or 64-bit?
What's happening on Activity Monitor - running out of memory, maxing out the processor etc?

From all reports I've heard, going from a PPC machine to an Intel makes a BIG difference now.

Internal-on the main HD

Dont know - 32 ? Im on a PPC Mac with 1'.4.11, that;s not able to do 64 is it? (not really sure)

Didn't check that yet...

Hmm just another couple of thou... I'll have to wait til the Napthalene version of the processors come out ( or whatever they're caalled:lol:) as I hear there's a rumour of a rumour that they'll not be that long....

Nehalem?
It may not be an insecticide but already somehow killed the industry as every one seem to be waiting for it rather than moving forward. Make a couple years now...

judging by the speed of my G5 PPC I'm going to need several chip generations ahead to get my 21MP files processing at more than a pleasant walk speed - I want rrrrrRapido for my £2'''!:cheesy:

Strange LR screen?

got this when starting to import CR2 files (LR 2.3)

Today's Mac Pros are just fine but you can still wait for the graphene based chips promising Terahertz switching or the quantic processors... We were both born the same year and have the same expectancy to see that before death... This is "The never ending story" ;)

Altough, that would be sad to see "The end"! No more updates, no more new ways...

You have to balance your patience vs the depth of your pockets. I very well remember having pushed my 1991 486-33 to its limits doing more with it than most Pentium users nine years later. My receipe was knowledge+patience. I wrote scripts tooking 5' minutes to execute to create many web pages based on databases. Then, I took the plunge for the Athlon processors. 5' minutes went down to 5' seconds on the same scripts!

Then again, years passed and I sucked all my new computer's blood again until crawl.

Last month I asked Lightroom on my new Mac Pro to process 17''' images in one shot. I was back to the 5' minutes wait of 1991...

Understanding the maths involved in the operation made me extremely surprized of how fast it was rather than bored!

This may be a point of view but I have some friends making some astronomical image processing taking a month to compute on a Cray computer and are glad to get their results so fast!

OK. Down to earth... ;) We are talking about everyday photos from common cameras on the market. Not the 33 Gigapixel one that Lightroom can't handle yet that was designed by a retired NASA spy camera designer as a hobby.

Just do like me; Put some pocket money aside everyday and one day, you will seat in the front row. :)

Best wishes,

I was about to ask for closing the thread as it will never end but this is new...

Can we consider it as a bug? I suggest that you report to Adobe as even slow computers just take more time but finally do the job.

Best wishes,

yes yes of course I might need to upgrade my comp, my complaints were tongue in cheek;)

The real question of this thread is only whether such long delays with 5D2 files are normal. Im not convinced it is.

Gone back to 2.2 - excessively long delay no longer happens

Serendipity had it that my changing to 5D2 coincided with changing to 2.3, so I didnt suspect 2.3 as the culprit
(I know I bought it a week or so ago but only started using in ernest)

Would be interesting if you come back here to report when 2.3 final will be there then...

BTW, is you latest 2.3RC screen bug at import gone now that you are back at 2.2? If so, you should report it anyway before we get that bug included in the 2.3 final. This is why there is an RC afterall...

Obviously;)

The delay you were experiencing with 2.3 ought not to be happening. It could be with 2.2 but not 2.3RC.
Can you please check once again.
Rename the LR application by adding 2.2 to the name and you ought to be able to install 2.3RC alongside, rename that as well by adding 2.3RC. Obviously they cannot both be open at once but you can easily see if they vary in speed easily by creating a small test catalog and importing files with each LR version.

I'm happy to check again, but Im not sure I understand your instructions - I did have them both installed (still do), one is named LR2 (that's 2.2) and the other is 2.3 RC

I realise I cant use them both at the same time. I was just trying the 2.3 version and now have gone back to using the 2.2 version

I had the same catalogue I believe for either program

Do you want me to install them both again?

PS EDIT:
just opened it again and it's not doing it at the moment ( only tried two images). What I have noticed is that previously it would say rendering preview ( or words to that effect) and then it would say rendering HIGH QUALITY preview, and that's what was taking so long I think. This time it didnt say the HIGH QUALITY bit.

I hadnt seen the HIGH QUALITY term before, at least not in LR2.2, so it is new to me in 2.3RC

pps EDIT: ah I see it only does the HIGH quality thing with the 5D2 files - still now it's 25 secs total not 5' like before...
