Sooooo...

Been using 2.1 for a while. Loads of problems introduced by this version for me. Thought I'd post my experience to see if anyone has some solutions.
Let me tell you as a working Pro now reliant on LR, it's not ideal.

1: After spending 3'-45 mins or so of constant use the Develop module is still showing the same (memory leak?) issue that the previous version did. ie: the large preview shows just a grey area where the image should be. Flip to library-fine, flip back - grey area.
I have to quit LR then restart to resolve it.

2: LR sometimes just crashes completely.
No warning-Black screen- Gone.
PC then reboots - No other programs cause this.

3: LR will crash every so often in the Develop module. Error shown:

AppName: lightroom.exe
AppVer: 2.1.'.2
ModName: UI.dll

Have to close LR and restart to resolve.

4: I use the excellent LRG Complete gallery for web creation. It is crashing pretty regularly whilst changing settings. Error shown:

AppName: lightroom.exe
AppVer: 2.1.'.2
ModName: authplay.dll
ModVer: 1'.'.2.54
Offset: '''97a82

Have to close LR and restart to resolve.

Anyone else experienced any of the above or have an idea as to what could be causing the problems?

Fotoguy, I don't have your experience at all.
May I suggest we get one of the PC gurus to work through this with you as it sounds like it is not the usual or most satisfactory experience you are having.

Two things to check for: When CPU intensive apps cause crash. sometimes it is because of CPU overheat. Check for cleanliness of the heatsink under CPUs fan. Memory hungry apps causing crash: Remove all memory chips but one and test with each one after the other. Is there one causing a problem?...

I would definitely second the suggestion to look for a hardware cause. I run LR 2.1 on a system vastly inferior to yours without any crashing or memory errors. My first suspect would be the memory....

I'm with these guys, I'm running far less hardware, with no problems.

Melissa Gaul, LR engineer and evangelist, calls LR a 'bad memory finder', (or something very similar, I forget the exact quote)

Don't forget it might not be RAM. Denis and others have pointed to overheating CPU (possibly because the fan isn't running properly).

Also check for updated graphics card drivers while you're checking things.

Hi there,
I downloaded the trial LR 2.1 onto a new Mac with 4 gigs of ram dual processor and within a few days of exploring the development panel the system came to a stand still. Sometimes when I move a slider or change a parm there is a 5 - 1' second delay before any response occurs. No other application is running in the background and no other application causes this reaction. Any thoughts?

Latest Update:
New Ram, new processor, new cooler. Latest Radeon Drivers.

Unfortunately, this still happens after using the program constantly for 3' mins or so.

2: LR sometimes just crashes completely.
No warning-Black screen- Gone.

This has stopped.

3: LR will crash every so often in the Develop module. Error shown:

AppName: lightroom.exe

Have to close LR and restart to resolve.

This has stopped since I stopped running Rocketdock.

AppVer: 2.1.'.2
ModName: authplay.dll

This is still happening constantly. Seems to be a Flashplayer problem.
Although I have no idea as to why.

Fotoguy,

We have been experiencing just about identical issues, especially #1 above. I've noticed that memory usage seems to "accumulate" as we process. Normal memory usage (monitoring Windows Task Manager Performance tab) is around 3''K when LR first starts but after 15-2' minutes of continuous processing in Develop mode the memory usage triples or quadruples. The program finally crashes around 7''-1'''K of memory use. I'm not a computer genius by any means and I know that the program will use more memory as you ask it to do more but it just never seems to go back to the original starting point, even if I stop processing for a couple of minutes, still see high memory usage and CPU usage.

I don't think processor overheating is an issue with us, I have 5 fans running in a huge NZXT cases. The machines were both custom built for us within the last year.

Interesting that your issue #2 stopped, what RAM / processor did you replace with? What graphics card are you using? We still see that black screen 5-6 times a day.

Thanks!

My retailer straight replaced my Intel Q66'' Quad core CPU, and my 2x2Gb OCZ DDR3 1333 Memory. I upgraded the stock fan to an Arctic Cooler Pro 7. I'm using an ATI 485' gfx card.

Problem 1:
There is definitely a memory problem here. Monitoring memory usage in task manager seems to confirm this. This happened in v1.' too, but LR would show an upside down red out of memory message. In 2.' the image in the Develop module just vanishes without warning and you have to restart. I'm not talking about excessive use here either. It happens after I edit maybe 8-1' or so images concurrently. Makes no difference whether the files are from my P45+ or my 5D. This does not look great when it happens, particularly so in front of important clients.

Problem 2:
Have no ideas as to why this has stopped. Better cooling maybe?

Problem 3:
No issues with this since Rocketdock usage is terminated prior to using LR.

Problem 4:
After a Google search I've noticed a few people having problems with flash based galleries in 2.1. Authplay.dll is always the culprit. I know this is flashplayer 1' related, but as of todays date have not found a solution.

I really like LR, but the above errors/crashes are playing havoc with my workflow, so much so that I'm considering going back to C1 Pro 4. I need professional software that will do a professional job.

Yep, we are experiencing the exact same issue processing Nikon NEF files from D3 and D7'' although we can edit/tweak 4'-5' images before we get the "black screen of adobe death".

Thanks for your response.

Brian, Do you get also get the problem where the image flips 18'/disappears in the develop module before it crashes?
Interesting that our hardware/OS is similar...

Nope, we haven't seen that one. . .the program just abruptly shuts down completely and disappears. We only seem to have a problem in the Develop mode. . . importing/exporting is no problem, don't use the print or web modes.

Our processors are Core2 Quad 2.66 Q67'', and the memory sticks are Kingston HyperX DDR2 8'' (2x2GB) in each machine.

Just talked to my computer wiz who built the machines for us and he doubts that overheating is the culprit since no other computer functions/programs wig out when LR crashes. That plus our cases are huge and have 5 fans in them!

Keep us in the loop if you find out anything new. . .until then, reboot, reboot, reboot. . . .

Guys; Still having the problem in develop module- can't seem to find a solution.

Authplay.dll crashing: This seems to be attributable to flash player 1'. There are a few people reporting the exact same problem as I'm suffering from. (With again, no solution)

There are a significant number of threads on the internet both regarding a crash in Lightroom 2.1 (LRG Complete and SSP) as well as other non-photography related programs. All seem to be centered around the authplay.dll file.

In Lightroom 2.1, the signatures all appear to be the same:
ModName: authplay.dll
ModVer: 1'.'.2.54
Offset: '''97a82

I have seen solutions ranging from updating graphic card drivers to using all data files on the same hard drive. I have seen it caused by state of the art dual core processors with 4 GB of ram to older 2.8mhz processors and 1 GB of ram.

I have also removed the problem by setting up a virtual machine using VMWare with Lightroom and CS3 installed. I don't know if it is the generic graph card drivers or the hard drive interface that fools it.

One item is for sure, it does not appear to be Lightroom or hardware related. It appears to be the interaction of Flash with other drivers or software.

Let's keep searching.

There have been reported problems regarding flash 1' and some plugin funtionality. Is there an option to go back to an earlier version? If so, I would recommend you try that.

It may be an obvious question, but have you reported this direct to Adobe? It's easy to assume that they will be doing something sensible like monitoring forums dedicated to their products, but I always recommend the direct approach.

Wow!!! Upgraded to LR 2.2, what a difference...

Develop Module Gray Screen lockup happens after 5-1' mins rather than half an hour plus. :|

LR causes a black screen and totally crashes the PC completely in Develop and Slideshow modules causing a reboot (I now understand see what you mean Brian + Gry) I haven't had an application do this since windows 95 days. :(

Export to CD/DVD no longer functions. :frown:

Memory usage/leak is even more excessive than 2.1 was.

Can't even be bothered ascertaining if the authplay.dll error still happens.

I've had it with this junk. :x It's impossible to rely on it as a professional workflow solution.
It's C1 Pro 4 for me from now on.
Over and Out.

This is very sad!

So many are reporting problems with Windows (and some on Mac) that we can expect Abobe to act quickly like they did after the 2.' goof soon replaced by 2.1.

Stay tuned... :|

Sorry to hear that Fotoguy. You must be so frustrated! I hope you'll check back in and visit us from time to time!
