1:1 vs. Standard Previews

Greetings all:

Still learning the full value of LR; now on 3 weeks and still going. I've done some searching in the forums regarding previews - importing, rendering, 1:1 vs. standard. The reason for my search is that I'm trying to improve the speed of my previews when they render in grid view in the Library mode. Unfortunately, I think I'm still a bit confused as to the best way to minimize the lag time in rendering grid view previews.

I have a brand new iMac running 1'.5.1 and LR 1.3.1 with 4gb of RAM. I don't believe this is a slow computer. I have just over 2'K images in the catalog; about 8'% jpeg, rest RAW.

So my appeal for help: which is actually the 'larger' preview - 1:1 or standard? I assume that the larger-sized preview, though more intensive in HD space and initial processing time, would in the end help with rendering time. IF so, which is the 'larger' preview, 1:1 or standard size?

1:1 preview is full size, standard preview is smaller (size set in catalog settings).

1:1's useful if you need to zoom in at all, but it takes up more space on your hard drive. If you rarely zoom in, standard preview's are a good compromise, and 1:1 previews will be rendered as you need them.

Thank you, Victoria. Am I correct in assuming that this applies to Loupe view, since there is no zoom in Grid view? And if so, would either preview make any difference in rendering faster thumbnails in Grid view?

Standard previews absolutely help with scrolling in Grid!

But there's no additional benefit to having 1:1 previews for scrolling in grid mode, to my knowledge.
