    yes jim, it used to be in import mode. I unchecked the Show import dialog and never happened again. The funny thing is that the setting states 'Show import dialog when a MEMORY CARD is detected'd, so basically for some reason, LR was confusing external hard drive with MEMORY CARD..... bizarre...
