    saving metadata to file

I want to amend my last comment. If you export as "original" a virtual copy, it exports the appropriate develop settings as an XMP file with the raw file you started with. I'm not sure that gets you where you want to be, but it would let you then import that pair of file and recreate the...

    saving metadata to file

Write Metadata writes to a "sidecar" file of the same name, but with file type .XMP if the file involved is not suitable for having the metadata saved into the file. For a file where the original is raw (say a Nikon NEF) you then end up with a file like DSC_1234.NEF and a DSC_1234.XMP...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

Right. That's my point, you would need to be travelling continually away from ANY internet access for a very long time to have it time out and need to check in. While it's possible someone might do that, with tethered cell phone data the number of people who cannot at least log in once every...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

A good solution. Thanks. So that does seem to imply that access to the servers is necessary for access to lightroom (after some period of time). Thus someone travelling with no internet access for a long time would just lose access. Rare case and getting more rare where you cannot get any...

    New user blues

Re Excire, ask them, last time I made an inquiry they were very responsive. There are a lot of programs adding cataloging features, partly in response to Adobe's subscription model. I have not been keeping up generally, but hopefully others will make specific recommendations, but you can...

    New user blues

Lightroom is a relatively inexpensive cataloging program that can keep a LOT of information and search based on it. Provided you have room for the images, it is not challanged by a few hundred thousand entries (for big TIFF's that is a lot of storage though which is a different matter). I am...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

That may be a significant part of the story, in that you already had a chance to contact the servers once and they said "expired", as opposed to it expiring (or being terminated) while you were disconnected. In the former it probably saved a status indication of "expired" in the later it is in...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

And you didn't have access when it verified you as ending? Like a switch to wifi you didn't expect? My attempt didn't morph into "ended", but (a) I was cheating and time did not really pass, who knows if that really matters, and (b) I did not wait very long, I tried getting around it then...

LR6 no longer available at B&H photo

Honestly I'm surprised they sold it this long. I think there is a LOT of cause for a retailer to be concerned that someone will come back to them complaining they sold an out of date product that won't even work with their camera (please, please don't tell me you think no one is that stupid...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

I wonder, or does it go by your profile? I just looked and I do not see an address or country in my profile, though presumably it remembered the region selected on the site when I signed up . I think it may be interesting to know how they figure this out. As you mention, VPN's (and corporate...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

So I did an experiment as well. I signed out on a laptop, disconnected it from the internet and rebooted. Started lightroom - no prompts (not even one to sign in, interestingly). I advanced the date to Dec 2019, started lightroom - no prompts, worked fine (and could get to develop)...

    NEC's MDSV Calibration Sensor

I have the prior sensor from NEC that came with their Spectraview, and it has always worked very well. I previously had two separate X-write sensors, and was frustrated that they gave quite different results on the same monitor, so bought the Spectraview. It was very close to one, very...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

Hal, was your computer plugged in during that time? The problem with these tests is that adobe has many (like dozen or two) processes running all the time in background even when you are not using it, and they are always communicating with the Adobe servers. So (this is a guess) they could be...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

My _impression_ though is that mode requires that it still be able to reach the adobe servers. I keep hearing of others who get into a situation where they are required to log in to just run the program, but cannot log in, and so can't run the program. It is always hard to pin these down, so I...

End of Adobe subscription software in Venezuela

I think it will be interesting to see how this gets implemented technically with respect to Classic. Will Adobe, for example, remove the ability to run lightroom at all, or will it fall back into the much publicized but little confirmed mode of allowing most features except develop? Or will...

How can a catalog best be placed on a DVD?

I'd just like to suggest that in the long run splitting up catalogs almost always becomes more problem than solution. Obviously your needs and motivations may be different than others, but many people find over time that their solution becomes itself a problem. A single catalog can point to a...

    Adobe Desktop Service.EXE High & Continuous I/O Reads/Writes

I've never used elements, but in similar circumstances I've often found it useful to re-install the product entirely, then un-install normally. There's also a cleaner tool though not sure if it works for elements 10 or not (also never used it): Use the CC Cleaner Tool for installation issues

    Adobe Desktop Service.EXE High & Continuous I/O Reads/Writes

I've had some of the (WAY WAY TOO MANY) Adobe processes seem to run amok. When I research I find lots of people complaining but rarely resolution, though once in a while Adobe has patched and fixed a problem. Sadly (or happily depending on viewpoint) you appear to be on the latest. I think to...

Jpeg vs tiff vs original RAW file

Raw is an infant. 16 bit Tiff is a 10 year old. 8 bit Tiff is a 30 year old. JPG is a 60 year old. Comparison is about how much flexibility you have to shape the results (i.e. in post processing) as opposed to how much is already baked in and not going to change.

What do you include in image Title?

Consider lightroom, it will search in "any text field" so you can be fairly cavalier where and how you code, and still find things. That said, there is more to "finding" than, well, just finding. As your catalog grows you will probably want to organize it more, so you can group shots in...

What do you include in image Title?

Please don't take this the wrong way but how would we know? You've told us what you do not do -- but what do you DO with images? For what purpose would you put any metadata in them -- that might tell you which to use. For example, if all you do is save them on your PC for future reference or...

What do you include in image Title?

What Cletus said. For me, shooting events, the title is mostly the event (e.g. FGCU vs Auburn Soccer 8/25/2019), the caption is something I want to say or describe about the photo. For those doing more serious sports shooting the caption would include the players names, numbers, perhaps a...

    Smugmug publish issue?

That's bizarre, and worrisome that they can interfere with each other. Glad you got it (mostly) sorted.

    Smugmug publish issue?

I agree it should work. Please do follow up if you get an answer. I really doubt it is the LR version itself. Maybe, but I have not heard or seen any issues specific to 8.4 and Smugmug, but it's always possible.
