    With a little help...?

Luc, apparently, according to this story http://unifiedphoto.com/2010/09/lightroom-images-do-not-look-same-as-photoshop/ it might have something to do with version 4 calibration profiles versus version 2 ones. Unable to test right now, but will surely do so.

    With a little help...?

Actually, I had never really noticed but I'm experiencing the same: when exporting a Lightroom-rendered Raw as Prophoto RGB 16 bit TIFF to Photoshop CS5 (with 'preserve embedded profiles' on in PS), the PS image appears notably less contrasty (less shadow clipping) than the LR image viewed in...

    Dual processor support

Hello, does anyone know if LR 3 supports dual processors and if so, what the better choice would be w.r.t. file processing... a MacPro with 1 quad core 3.2 GHZ processor with 16 GB ram or a MacPro with 2 quad core 2.4 GHZ processors with 8 GB ram Price on both machines is the same... Thanks

Changed behavior in Lightroom - Photoshop - Lightroom workflow

@ Victoria: thanks. Makes life easier. Goes to show that if you stick to routine behavior, you can miss out on new developments. Will probably have been in the 2.x to 3.0 switch, because I definitely remember it doing that before LR3. Luckily they didn't ask in the ACE exam :-) As for the second...

Changed behavior in Lightroom - Photoshop - Lightroom workflow

Hi everybody, I’ve got two questions regarding Lightroom to Photoshop interactivity. I’m working on LR 3.4, PSCS5 and ACR 6.4, Mac. 1) I always used to tell people when they send a raw photo from Lightroom over to Photoshop, to use Save rather than Save as when they’re done editing in PS...

Use of icc profile for LaserJet 2550 in Lightroom?

Unfortunately you're on a PC, otherwise, you could just print to Preview from Lightroom and print with your CMYK icc profile from Preview. I do so with my Xerox 7500 and am getting excellent results. Profiles made with a ColorMunki Photo from X-Rite.

Punch preset You might actually even think to apply the preset already upon import, in the import dialog, under 'Apply during import'.

Suggestions on how to advance to the next level in Lightroom

There's a good book on Lightroom's Develop Module that features a detailed analysis of all the sliders in the Develop Module and then shows ten before and after photographs explaining how the author achieved that look. It's interesting because it not only deals with the how but also with the why...

adding some color to a b&w

Yes, you could pick a blue hue for either shadow or highlight color in the Split Toning Panel and then drag around with the Balance Slider to target the tones you want. PS will probably give you more control, because you can select the midtones and use masks, but maybe LR is all you need.

What does Minimize Embedded Metadata do?

The problem with the 'minimize embedded' is that it's a little 'All or (almost) Nothing'... And all can be annoying, because for example your complete processing goes into your exported file as metadata. Say you've got that 'signature' look you've created in the Develop Module. Anyone...

What is the proper way to round-trip between LR3 and PS CS5?

Excellent explanation, Jim. I'd like to add that there's another way of opening a file in PS, and that is via the 'Photo => Edit in => Open as Smart Object' command. That will put a copy of your raw inside of a TIFF container, and send that TIFF over to Photoshop. While in Photoshop, you will...

    moving Develop Presets

Jon, when 'structuring' your presets, you should know that the folders and the presets they contain are sorted alphanumerically. So, if there's a specific order you want them to appear in, the workaround right now is to rename them something like 01_, 02_, and so on... Or, if you want to be...

    Export plugin to increase exposure/brightness

What you could also do is, right before you export your pictures, select them all in Grid View in the Library Module and hit the single right arrow of the Brightness or Exposure control. That will add a relative amount of brightness or exposure (in exposure, it's 1/3 of a stop)... It will do so...

Adding text under multiple pictures in print module

There is a workaround: if you use a plugin like LR/Mogrify, you can export your picture with for example a white border underneath it, and then let Mogrify add a caption on that white border. Reimport those pictures into the catalog (you can have Lightroom do so automatically in the export...

Need to adjust a .psd image with transparency in LR. No alpha in LR.

Ok, from what I gather you have the corrected image and on top of that, in a layer, you have the original mask, but not as a mask but as an actual layer. So partly black, partly transparent. That's not a 100% what I meant in my previous post, but this can work, too... Ctrl-Click on that layer...

    exporting with 1-2 pixel borders

My advice would also be Mogrify. You can do a lot more with it, actually, and it's definitely worth whatever you're paying it (you get to choose, as it's donation-ware). Otherwise, if you own Photoshop, you might also write a custom action that does the border-adding (basically extending the...

Need to adjust a .psd image with transparency in LR. No alpha in LR.

Hi, that should be done in Photoshop: there's no way to do so in LR... So, you'd take your LR Edited image and send it to PS with CMD-E / Ctrl-E Then in PS, do Ctrl/Cmd-A to select all pixels, select the photoshop document where you already made the mask and paste the contents as a new layer...

Need to adjust a .psd image with transparency in LR. No alpha in LR.

Hi, Lightroom doesn't support transparancy. At least, not in it's library and develop module (you can use partially transparent pictures saved as PNG 24 from Photoshop as Identity Plates to create all kinds of layout effects). The idea of using Lightroom is to do tasks like basic image...

    Publish Services-Hard drive-What for?

I use them for album design using InDesign: I put my Lightroom-processed raw files in a Publish Service and publish them to a folder on my hard drive. In InDesign, I start layouting my album by dragging the published pictures (JPG's or TIFFs) into the InDesign containers. The nice thing about...

    lost spray can

It also might be that it's just not showing in your toolbar. On the bottom right of the tool bar is a small downward pointing arrow. Clicking that allows you to check which tools you want to have appear in the tool bar. It's an option that is especially useful on smaller monitors.

Changing font size of ruler and making grid more visible in Print Module

Hi Todd, they're all very legitimate concerns, but AFAIK none are currently available in LR3. There's an option in LR's Preferences to change the fonts of the interface from normal to large, but it doesn't seem to affect the ruler. There's no zooming, either and no way to drag guide lines from...

Saving Development settings as a preset

Hi, alternatively, you can also hit the + icon on the Develop Presets Panel in the right panel of the Develop Module. It will give access to the same dialog box as the menu command does. As noted, only check the checkboxes that are necessary for the effect you want to replicate. Uncheck...

    wacom tablets

Hi John, I cannot answer your question directly, because I'm on a Mac but I wanted to give you some related advice. First of all, congrats on getting a tablet: it's really going to make your develop process more fun, faster and more accurate. If you're going to buy an Intuos 4, be sure to...
