Johan, thank you, that was it. I was able to reproduce this outcome by locking it (intentionally, this time) before importing it. I think in my rush to keep shooting the other day, I was careless when I inadvertently landed in the "lock/unlock" menu in my camera and left that one image locked.
Thank you, Cletus. The naming template has been in use for years without a problem. And I create a new folder every time I do an import and have never had a naming conflict upon import.
I’ve been using the same import file-renaming preset for years without incident, but yesterday, during a routine import, there was a message that one file out of the thirty or so on my card could not be renamed (see screenshot); it was imported without problem.
Even once imported, when I tried...
Thank you Y.K.
I've decided that for the time being, I will forgo any backing up during the day and keep to my regular habit of conscientious end-of-the-day (i.e., once I'm finishing working) backing up with Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine (with the automatic backup feature unchecked)...
Thanks for the continuing help.
My deliberations about what I want to do continue. As of this writing, I’m leaning toward using time machine with only my MacBook, with an attached SSD; continuing to rely on our good Carbon Copy Cloner habits of daily backups (each of us backs up daily to two...
Thank you Cletus, Conrad, and Louie for your replies and their pointing me to other consideration related to my situation.
For clarification, my wife and I have two MacBook Pros and one iMac, and we’d like to avoid using one external drive for Time Machine backups for each device -- that...
Thank you, John. I've attached a PDF of what I read about Time Machine and Lightroom protecting itself (taken with my iPhone from the book itself).
I'll need a little more time to think through the rest of your reply and get back to you with follow-up if appropriate. Thanks again.
Thank you, Rusty. I do have "Automatically write changes into XMP" checked.
Have you any thoughts on whether a PSD would be in any jeopardy if it is open in Photoshop when a Time Machine back up starts or is opened when one is in progress?
My actual question is in the last paragraph. The other paragraphs set what I hope will be useful context.
The disk in our Time Capsule has died. I’m using it as only a router for now (ethernet connection to Verizon Fios), and have ordered a Synology RT2600ac router because it can 1) serve as a...
Thank you, Victoria. I started to do it with my "different route" (as you describe it; see #3 above) and it's working fine. I don't use cloud sync at all.
In my workflow, whenever I do "Export as catalog" (which is not infrequently), I export the files to a new location. I've been doing it this...
Thank you, Victoria. I had been thinking there might be a fix for Catalog 2.
As I was thinking through the workflow for your suggestion, it came to me that, assuming Catalog 2 can’t be fixed, I could, instead of exporting its files to another catalog, create a new catalog (call it Catalog 3)...
Last summer I updated from El Capitan to Mojave and from Lightroom CC (c. 2015) to Lightroom Classic (currently using 9.3). I have my main catalog and files on my MacBook Pro and two other catalogs (call them 1 and 2) and their files on their own external drives.
Although I’m posting the...
I haven't been following the appearance of new books on Photoshop for a couple of years now, but I can recommend any recent Martin Evening book on Photoshop CC. As you might imagine, it's hard for books on Photoshop to keep up with all the changes from Adobe, therefore many books that are "out...
I use keywords and corresponding smart collections to identify the files I’ve printed.
The keywords and smart collections allow me to readily find not only all the files I’ve printed, but also how large I’ve printed them, on what size/kind of paper, and where they are stored, for example, all...
In some of my collections (not all), the number of images to the right of the collection name is not the same as the number of images that appear in the grid mode (the filters are off.) In the attached screen shot, the collection would appear to have 27 images, but only 19 show up in the grid...
Thanks so much for all your help today. As you might imagine, I need to digest all this for a while. Your identifying all these bits and pieces for me to consider has provided a nourishing learning curve.
Appreciatively,
Jeffrey
This is a big help. Two follow-ups:
1) If I want to use Time Machine "automatically", that is, as it's set up for the full iMac back ups each hour, I'm not aware of how to set up (in the System Preferences for Time Machine) a way to back up only part of the now "unexcluded" device (i.e., Lr's...
Thanks. A lot to consider. I'll return to this thread if called for after I give the situation a bit more thought. Jeffrey
P.S. From the blue "?" in the thread's reproduction of my 09:16 post, I'm concluding the png of my finder's screen shot didn't go through. So here it is again, in case...
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I gather from your first paragraph that a (the most?) significant difference between your back up strategies and the one I'm contemplating is that I have everything on one EHD drive. I'm using this arrangement of the Lightroom folder structure that was recommended...
I recently began to use Adobe Lightroom 5 (I continue to use Aperture, as I have for years). All of the Lightroom image files and catalogs are on one external hard drive, which I use on my iMac, my Macbook Pro, and in the digital labs of a school where I'm taking a course.
Not yet having...
