Next generation Image display (gallery / blog / other)

Some few years ago Flickr was purchased by Smugmug. It still exists, but much of what was free is no longer, though some things remain free. How widely used I do not know, though personally I almost never have anyone point me there to show me something. But there are no signs of it vanishing...

Next generation Image display (gallery / blog / other)

Smugmug is a bit like that also. I recently did some galleries for my relatives. I tagged all the photos by doing facial recognition, and since many were digitized scans also tagged them with dates as best I could. Then I created "smart" galleries at Smugmug (not in Lightroom). So I had...

Lightroom 10 corrupts catalog in conversion

I'm glad it worked out, though it is a bit scary to have corruption that comes and goes.

Lightroom 10 corrupts catalog in conversion

Almost certainly if the catalog is being flagged as corrupted in the process of converting to V10, it is already corrupted in V9, you are just not happening to hit the type/area corrupted. V10 will read the entire catalog and rewrite it, so it is, for want of a better word, more sensitive to...

Difficulty with Importing Images from external drive IN Chronological Order

To elaborate slightly -- the Added Order may be more random, but the Captured Date (assuming one is present in the file) will not be changed by importing, so display order is a matter of how you request it be sorted. Once in the catalog there is no single order -- you can sort by (most)...

Chinese (?) characters in my User Comments metadata !!

Hey, is User Comment a pure Lightroom thing perhaps? I do not know Unicode well, but there were concepts of Language Tags and other control characters that act like "interpret the following in this way". I wonder if it's possible something like that got flipped, which might account for the...

Chinese (?) characters in my User Comments metadata !!

I would guess it's corruption that fed binary data into the field as opposed to something purposely Chineese, though take it and run it through google to see what it says. That begs the question how you got corruption of course. If you open it directly in PS (not through LR) and look in the...

How do companies get away with this?

More to your question: Because the government agencies that we would expect to protect us do not. In the US most of the money going to politicians comes from corporations, so naturally the entire system is set up to give corporations a pass. I suspect it is similar in other countries. Add to...

Smugmug plugin not working after upgrade to L10 classic

Glad it is sorted. Spontaneously disappearing files are a bit scary. ;)

Smugmug plugin not working after upgrade to L10 classic

And that OS would be..... ? Windows? Mac? I did mine years ago manually and it has preserved that location, so I am not sure where the default is. Flicker on Windows is in c:\program files\etc. Is it possible you have anti-virus of some sort that might have found it and removed it...

Smugmug plugin not working after upgrade to L10 classic

Where did you install it? (I'm assuming the download version lets you pick?). Having it disappear is weird. There are a few areas where the O/S might erase stuff, temp areas for example (what O/S do you have).

    new updates october 202

I think it depends a lot on the type of work you do, but I think it is also a mis-stated way of really saying "spending time waiting on the computer is painful and I want to do it less". Despite having said it, I do not find myself editing instead of shooting. but I frequently find myself...

If that's net productivity including human time -- maybe. If that's processing speed --that's tough, depending on how high you aim for performance. AMD in particular with the threadripper CPU's is really pushing that envelop, and with LR not using the GPU still for many things, CPU speed is...

This subject came up in an astro photo processing thread also. My 2 cents for the Windows crowd (I don't understand the Mac ecosystem enough to have an opinion): I think most people who do serious work on a computer, e.g. spend a lot of time photo processing, ought to have both. I think you...

I always figured at worst I can get Dell's recovery image and put it back on the system if they give me grief over warranty service, or if I need to return. But "wasting too much time" ... it's a computer. Their entire design goal is to waste your time. You may THINK they are to save us...

    new updates october 202

Just in the FWIW department, I've been buying Dell laptops (for myself and companies I managed) for decades. Their hardware tends to be good, their software is awful. Wiping and doing a clean install from a Microsoft provided kit (they are free to download and put on a thumb drive, microsoft...

    new updates october 202

So I have an XPS15 that has a Nvidia GTX 1050 and a Intel HD 630 (this laptop dates from about 2017). I don't have any Adobe products on it, but I had a astronomy planetarium program that uses the GPU. I set it up, one after the other, as the Nvidia and then Intel, and ran the program, and it...

Ouch. I actually have a XPS15 that has an NVidia card. I'm in the middle of stuff now, but will try it when I get a bit of time.

Is the issue you want to just tell it to use the NVidia? Or are you saying the NVidia won't work? If I recall Windows 10 lets you assign GPU's to specific applications.

How to confirm Lightrooms suggestions for detected faces ?

Hmmm... that's certainly the place you expect a checkbox. I was wondering if you were somehow in a different mode. So if you click where the check mark was does it do anything? I.e. is it a display artifact? Are you actually on 9.4 or did you upgrade to 10? Just to make sure... the check...

Dell's support organization has some smart people, but they are isolated and insulated by layer after layer of inexperienced poorly trained staff buried in offshore call centers whose primary mission is low wage cost with no real access to people who actually know anything. I would not draw...

Smugmug plugin not working after upgrade to L10 classic

Even easier: I just hit the update button in plugin manager, when it was done I restarted lightroom, and it worked fine. Mine was windows, not sure if that's different. I did not try it before updating based on people saying it did not work.

    new updates october 202

But see there's the rub... those who want to just sit still and not change anything need to... well, not change anything. Decide you want to not change Lightroom or Mac or PC, but buy a new camera -- you broke your part of that plan. (Note I'm not suggesting that DXO's delay was a good thing...

    new updates october 202

I thought it was just me. I went to update the little mini running my player piano and found the linux was so old that I could not even upgrade, Ubuntu had disabled the upgrade process, so I had to rebuild. When stuff just sits and works, we tend to ignore it, and as I get older my "ignore"...
