Hi - quite often I seem to be unable to create a new mask, i.e. when I click on the masking icon, the floating window with the new mask option doesn't appear. What am I doing wrong? It does work occasionally, but not predictably.

Try docking the panel. Drag it into the right panel so it will appear at the top of this panel rather than as a floating panel.
