How to make a new catalog in Lightroom 6.14?

Greetings,

I would like to have two Lightroom catalogs in Lightroom 6.14. One for current digital photos and one for historic and scanned photos.

Can this be done? Is there a guide somewhere to follow? I have tried it several times without luck. I have my photos and catalog on an external hard drive.

File->New Catalog...
Select a name and location for the new location and click Create.

Switch between them with either File->Open Catalog.... or File->Open Recent

Why not just use one catalog? I find it makes Library searches for photos if everything is in one catalog.
