Whilst researching on the effect of the different ways on importing raw files into LR Classic, I noticed that some of my DNG folders were much larger than those holding the original raw files. Using a different catalogue, I re-imported the raws, again as dng. I found that the new dng folder was >50% smaller than before, and around 30% smaller than the raw - just what I'd originally expected.

I'm intending to review my other folders to see if the same problem affects them, but can you please explain how this phenomenon occured? I have had problems with smart previews being too large - now fixed - so maybe something to do with that?

Possibly you had 'Embed Original Raw File' checked at the time? This would then hold the original file and the dng in one dng wrapper (see Appendix E-7 in your Classic book)

Thanks. That is possible, although I'm inclined to doubt it. Anyhow, problem appears resolved so thanks for your interest.

I compared overall size of folders of original raw files with those of dng's, to identify the folders with the (biggest) problems. Where the dng's were >= size of raw, I re-inputted to a new dng. Some re-editing needed but fortunately not too much.
