    figured it out Selwin: just wanted you to know that, with your expert help, I did solve this problem. Following your strategy, I was able to restore my catalog. It took a little jiggering and improvisation, but I now have a functioning catalog. So thanks!

    Yep, file names are the same. I tried the renaming trick on another folder and it worked fine. There are about 7,000 images in the folder. 667 are "missing." From now on, I will use LR to move/rename folders. In the meantime, I wish this was working. I only call it a bug because it's not...
