Hmmm. Is it right that I have to be logged in to Creative Cloud and have it running before Lightroom Classic will work? I don't like being forced to do something to satisfy Adobe and I'm sure Creative Cloud is consuming resources as my Lightroom has sure slowed down since the recent update.

Nope. every time I close Creative Cloud, Lightroom closes. A great great piece of software ruined by the megalomaniacs at Adobe. Off we go again.... :-(

You need to remain logged in, but the app itself does not have to be running (though it's advisable to keep it running in the background in order to keep your apps up-to-date). Are you logging out when you close it? When I close it on both my Mac and Windows systems (without logging out) app open Lightroom app continues to run as normal.

I have the same experience as Jim: The Creative Cloud desktop application does not need to be running. Lightroom Classic still works if I quit the Creative Cloud desktop app, as long as I remain signed into Creative Cloud; that’s what really matters.

Creative Cloud does consume resources, because there are a number of Creative Cloud background processes that are always running even if you quit the Creative Cloud desktop app, which is really just a front end to the services. However, the amount of system resources used by those processes is typically quite low — a few percent or less, comparable to many other background processes the OS itself runs every day. So if Lightroom Classic is slowing down on you, the Creative Cloud background processes are usually not enough to move the needle that much…so you should still use normal troubleshooting steps to find out the real cause of a slowdown.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give it a go without signing out. It just bugs me that Adobe (and others) are so controlling. The way of the world I guess :)

The Creative Cloud App is what is known as a "Terminate and Stay Resident". app. It consumes very little resources except the it wakes up and checks if it needs to act. Lots of manufactured use this type of approach. Microsoft is another company that employs the TSR apps. Instead of publicly announcing itself in the tool bar like creative Cloud, you find many stealthy apps running in the background. Check the Activity monitor. I count 15 or so associated with Adobe. More than 8 associated with Google Drive and Several with Safari and many background tasks running that I can not readily identify when I checked my computer just now. It is a common misconception that when you run a program, only one app is opened.

You are using software by subscription. You shouldn’t be surprised, or blame Adobe, for wanting to verify that your subscription is still valid.
