Hi all, when I travel I bring my iPad Pro with me along with a certified Apple USB-C dongle and an external drive. I've noticed that when importing raw images directly into Lightroom, (and it took a while to discover this) a handful of images don't show up in LR. So I decided to test - is this a LR problem or an iPad problem?

I began importing all images onto the iPad instead, then importing to LR from the iPad. The result is the same - a small handful of images do not get imported.

Something about importing from the iPad itself is causing this glitch, but what? What would you do next to test this? I can't seem to find others with this same issue. As info, my iPad stays updated with the latest software.

Thank you.

Have you tried connecting a camera care reader the iPadPro? This is the method that I use and I’ve never had any problem.

I also have a Portable EHD that connectes directly with a USB-C cable. I’ve never had any problem with the iPadPro reading anything on the disk.

What do you mean by “USB-C Dongle”. AFAIK, Apple does not sell “Dongles” It sells adapters. Which one do you have and why do you need it?

Thank you for your comments and suggestion, @clee01l . I will try that instead of the USB-C to lightning cable. To answer your question, a dongle is simply a generic term referring to a computer peripheral that plugs into a USB port. Apple makes 23 different dongles. Though they do not officially refer to them as such, it’s a common industry term.

Your iPadPro must be a older model. Generation 2 & 3 models come with a USB-C port. No “Dongle” needed. The term Dongle is not descriptive. (Too generic) And I don’t think in current usage. Calling any adapter that plugs into your device a “dongle” does not help. Apparently what you have is a Lightning to USB-C adapter. It is the “Lightning” part that is helpful to me.

I think it might be the “Lightning” port that is the problem. I’d guess that it is not providing enough power to run the EHD. If your EHD has its own power supply, try using that when you try to import. I do not think you will have a problem if you import from the camera card using a Lightning Card reader. Iused to use this (again without issue) when I had one of the earlier iPads (before the iPadPro).

Hi Juliette. So does your iPad has a lightning port or a USB-C port? And are you importing the photos from a camera, or a card reader, or an external drive? And then are the photos going into the Camera Roll first and then into Lightroom, or direct into LR?

I had a similar glitch a few years ago, it turned out to be a conflict between Olympus cameras and iOS, so it's probably worth taking the external drive out of the equation temporarily, for the sake of narrowing down where the error's occurring.

I have a habit of calling them dongle's too!

Hi Victoria, thank you for responding. My iPad Pro gen. 3 has a USB-C port, so I am importing through that directly from my SD cards. At first I imported directly into LR but then started noticing the missing images. So, I tried going to camera roll first. All photos are intact in camera roll but upon import into LR, sometimes an image or two won’t make it over.

I will continue testing but there’s currently no external drive in the equation as is and the problem still occurs.

Hi Juliette. So that’s a usb-c card reader, right? And they’re all showing up in Photos but failing on import to Lightroom? Is that right? Hmmm… any patterns you can spot? The last time I saw something like this, it was photos ending in 1 that tripped it, but that’s somewhat random! What camera?

Hi Victoria, this is the exact item I am using. - https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUFG2AM/A/usb-c-to-sd-card-reader

And yes, the images import into my iPad and show up in the finder with no issues. Importing from iPad documents over to Lightroom will end up with missing photos. If I import directly into LR, same problem. I cannot recall if this also happened with my Nikon camera, but it’s definitely happening with Fuji X-T3 images.

You made me wonder about camera files now. I’m going to test with several different cameras and see if I find a pattern. I’ll report back this week.

I’m a little confused. You said earlier that your iPadPro had a Lightning port (Making it a Gen 1 iPadPro) Gen2 & 3 iPadPros have a USB-C port and the card reader that you show is USB-C.

I have a Gen2 and a Gen3 iPadPro and a USB-C XQD card reader for my Nikon which has only an XQD card slot.

Please clarify which iPadPro you have and what single port it has.

With all these different connectors names, it’s an easy mistake to make.

We’ve established that it’s a usb-c card reader, but Juliette has moved back to a laptop now anyway.
