Working in the Book module, the book title text on my cover is over a gray area of an underlying photo. The text is white and I'd like it to stand out more by adding a stroke or shadow. Is there a way to do that? If not, can I create the text in Photoshop, save it as a PNG and add the graphic to the book? I haven't been able to find a way to do either.

prepare the cover (image and text). To know the pixel dimensions export the book as jpg files. That is what i do because i mostly have a panorama for the dust cover and the dimensions change with the number of pages in the book (example: http://pixel-werke.de/mandalay/index.html)
I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you suggesting that I add the text to the photo in Photoshop, bring it back into Lightroom as a new photo file and add it to the book?

yes, and because it should fill the whole cover or the whole frontcover you should know the pixel dimensions, which you get to know if you export your book as jpg's

I agree with @hanoman -Create a photo specifically for the Cover-
Unfortunately- LrC does not recognize transparency in PNG images so the need to make the cover photo entirely in Photoshop. Transparent backgrounds in a PNG render as 'white' in the book.

From Library view select the cover photo and [Edit In] Photoshop,
If from an original RAW, LrC will send a TIF 'copy' to Ps that returns to LrC.
If {Edit In Ps] from a JPG or TIF then choose to [Copy with Lr edits].
Now add you text to the image with any 'fx' that you want (Stroke, drop shadow, etc)
From Ps [Save] and the new cover title can be added to the Book Collection for the cover.

If you have already created a PNG Title- Open the cover photo in Ps (as above), then MENU: File > Place embedded, and select the Title PNG image to 'place' on the cover photo.

Your new Cover photo+Title can be sized on the cover as required.
'Place embedded' will give you a 'Transform' box to resize, move, the text-

Use the image on the cover-

Thanks for the help @hanoman.

As an interesting follow-up detail, I exported a page from a Standard Landscape book (10x8 in, 25x20 cm) and got a jpeg that was 2887 x 2475 px at 300 dpi. I then opened the original image out of LRC into PS and got an image that was 4592x3448 px, 13.1 x 9.8 inches (33.3 x 25.2 cm at 350 ppi which, once resized to 300 ppi was 15.3 x 11.5 in. (38.8 x 29.9 cm). So LRC was reducing the size of the photo in the book.

Given that photos can be resized in a LRC book cell, I assume the only issue is that the original image size and resolution are at least the same as the book size.

Thanks for a very helpful and thorough answer. Alec

Yes. All that fussing about with dimensions, etc, is not necessary. The photo (any photo!) will 'Fit', or 'Fill' with zoom, any cell you define. And you get a warning if resolution (ppi) is below par.
