I am a LrC user and have somehow consumed my 20GB of storage on the Photography Plan which doesn't seem to be very much considering I only have about 7,500 photos stored. I'm wondering how to best utilize Lr Mobile.

Right now, all pictures I take on my phone are automatically copied to Lr mobile, which then sync with LrC desktop app. When I create an album in LrC and sync it to mobile, does this duplicate the data footprint on the 20GB of alotted cloud storage? If so, I have de-sync'd all of these albums but the data size did not change.

Being over the limit, my mobile images are no longer sync'ing with Lr Mobile. Perhaps my only option is to upgrade my storage which is apparently expensive AF with Adobe at $19.99/mo for 1TB. I don't need all of the additional apps—I just need more storage.

The cheap solution is lots of manual management. Once the full sized iPhone photos have been sync’d to Lightroom Classic they can be removed from the LrC “All Photographs” special collection. This will also cause then to be deleted from your 20GB plan storage and from the cloud. To add them back to the cloud as a Smart Preview (proxy) image file just put these images into a static Collection and after the originals have been removed from the cloud, set that collection to sync.

Smart Preview (proxy) image files do not count against your plan storage.

You will need to periodically repeat this process as you add more images from the iPhone.

Whatever photos are imported into your phone’s Lr app are full res and count towards your 20GB cloud quota. Once they have downloaded into LrC you can select them inside the All Synced Photographs special collection and remove them: they will not be deleted from LrC but they will removed from the cloud and the phone, thus freeing some / all of the 20GB space.

Whatever photos you sync to the cloud from LrC, upload as smaller smart previews and don’t count at all towards your 20GB cloud quota. So you can have all your photos on the cloud this way if you wish. You can sync specific Collections or drag into the All Synced Photographs special collection any photos you want on the cloud. This includes the ones you may have previously downloaded from your phone (and unsynced so that they don’t consume cloud space): This time they will be uploaded from LrC as smart previews.

Once any files download to LrC from the Lr cloud, LrC “owns them”. So if you then delete them directly from the phone/ cloud they won’t be deleted from LrC - they are safe. But if you delete from within LrC any still synced file, it will automatically be deleted from the cloud as well.

Thanks Clee. I definitely do not want to sign up for an uber manual process so I guess my best option is to upgrade the storage plan. One other question I have for you: if I delete a photo from LrC on desktop that is a photo that I took on my mobile and that sync'd to LrC, it will also be deleted from mobile storage (thus deleting it from visibility on mobile) correct?

As of now, the only photos that are sync'd from LrC desktop to mobile are ones that I either add to my mobile folder in LrC, or photos that I add to an album in LrC and sync with mobile. So 95% of my photos that are taking up storage on my cloud limit are photos that I take on my phone (to my knowledge).

Have a read of this blog post that’ll help you clear out the cloud space https://www.lightroomqueen.com/remove-photos-cloud-sync/

I did, but the issue I believe I'm running into is the below step. As I have been over the 20GB limit for a few months, those photos have not sync'd to LrC desktop. It seems anything in excess of the 20GB limit is not sync'ing (as expected). So I cannot complete the below in the blog post:

  1. First, check Classic has completed syncing from the cloud. This means any photos uploaded using other devices are safely downloaded into Lightroom Classic and stored on your local hard drive.

Yes, deleting a sync’d photo from LrC will delete it everywhere. Deleting from the Lr Cloud will only delete from the Lightroom devices and not any Lightroom Classic catalog. You need to pay particular attention when managing images in L Classic and image in the Cloud.

Assuming I want the image to truly be deleted, my current flow is to do so from LrC and not mobile so I'm good there.

You should remove the photos that have successfully synced into LrC, from within the All synced photographs collection. This will delete at least those from the cloud so that other ones from your phone can upload into the cloud space that they had occupied. You will have to repeat this process a few times.

OK understood. Where should I move them to? Perhaps I should simply delete them? Right now, and when sync'd, mobile photos are auto-cataloged in date folders YYYY-MM within LrC.

You don’t move them anywhere- you just remove them from the All synced photographs collection. They will still be stored in the same folders in LrC but they will get unsynced from the cloud, as far as LrC is concerned. As far as Lr (cloud) is concerned they will be deleted.

You can definitely delete (from disk) from within LrC any files you don’t want to keep anyway, cloud or no cloud. If they happen to be synced they will be removed also from the cloud.

Will I lose visibility of the images on mobile of the images I remove from All synced photographs collection?

“All synched photographs” is where your cloud photos are referenced in Lightroom Classic. Removing them from “All synched photographs” will delete them from the cloud and all mobile Lightroom apps. It will not delete them from the Lightroom Classic catalog or your local disk. If after you delete them from the cloud, All of these that are full sized images will be deleted from your 20GB of plan storage. If you Resync them from LrC to to a Collection that is syncing to the Cloud, then Smart previews (Proxy files will be sent to the cloud instead of full size images and these will be store for free outside of your plan storage limits.

ok Perhaps I will periodically delete photos from All synced photographs to free up space and use my iPhone's photos app to browse mobile photos. I don't like Lr mobile browsing anyway.

Once I delete the Lr Mobile images from All Synced photographs that have successfully sync'd with LrC, the mobile images that never made it to LrC should sync, is that correct?

Yes, the deletion of the images, through sync, will release the space they occupied in the cloud. When this happens your phone will be able to upload the next batch of images to the cloud (until the 20GB space is filled again) So these images will download down to LrC - in which case you will repeat the process.

Is there a reason why my syn is stuck at 2,843 images?

Click on the “gear” in the screen shot you posted. It will open a dialog box that shows which images have not sync’d. Common reasons include trying to sync video files.

You must give it time.
Occasionally LrC syncing does indeed gets stuck. In that case you can reset it:
Go to LrC Preferences, Lr Sync, and press the Alt or Option key. Press the Rebuild Sync Data button that then appears. You must restart LrC and then enable syncing again from the cloud icon on the top right.

By the way, any videos that may have synced down to LrC from the cloud, will not appear in the All synced photographs special collection. You must check if they have indeed downloaded into LrC and then delete them directly from any Lr (cloud) app.

To see what's actually uploaded on the cloud sign into Lightroom.Adobe.com with your Adobe ID and password, to use the web interface. Find all the cloud videos and put them inside an Album. Note the item count. This Album will sync as a Collection in LrC. If the item count is the same in the collection, - which means that all the videos have downloaded - you can delete the videos from the cloud.

What I did was go to Lightroom.Adobe.com and filtered to videos > delete as per the guide https://www.lightroomqueen.com/remove-photos-cloud-sync/ in @Victoria Bampton comment above.

Yes, but have you checked that they have already synced/downloaded into LrC first? That is, in case you want to keep them.

yea most of them are old and sync'd
