I’ve contemplated for a few years now changing all my workflow to a external drive. I regularly use Lightroom classic, Lightroom and photoshop. I have a couple Samsung t5 ssds and a t7 ssd. Would the T7 Samsung be good for putting my catalog and images on? I would obviously have a backup solution as well but would like to go to an external drive so I can use Lightroom classic on my iMac and MacBook Air. Any thoughts appreciate, thanks.

You will need to set preferences to store Presets with catalog. All of you preset folders will need to be copied from the global location to the Lightroom Settings folder adjacent to the Catalog.

There are other files and presets that do not get stored with the catalog. These will need to be copied and synced to both computers.

When this is complete, you won’t have any problems switching between computers.

Building on what @clee01l has suggested, I would consider whatever drive can take advantage of the fastest ports on my machine. The Samsungs' are generally fast drives (and I have several T5's that I enjoy using), although their NVMe drives are faster than their earlier SSD's, but the throughput will have a decent impact on the performance of the drive, and that is dictated by the port type and generation.

I thought if I moved the entire catalog to the external ssd that everything within the catalog would be moved?

The catalog file is just one file that the Lightroom Classic app needs. Your Lightroom Preferences are a separate file and contain certain preference settings that need to be available in both systems. If you look at the Presets panel in Lightroom Preferences, to will see that things like Import Presets, Develop Presets and other presets are located in a global location available to ALL catalog files or in a folder local to the catalog that makes them specific to only that catalog. Since your catalog is on a removable disk, you want your Presets available in the local location on that disk since you have two instances of Lightroom on two different computers. Each computer will have a different global location.
