Lightroom 5 versus Lightroom Classic

Its been a year or more dealing with Covid since I used my Adobe photoshop Lightroom 5 and working on my photos. I see now there is Lightroom (cloud based) and Lightroom Classic (desk top based) systems. I'm wondering if there is an actual Lightroom Classic software that I need to purchase or is my Lightroom 5 still okay? I note there was a Lightroom 6 after my 5. If Lightroom Classic is different than Lightroom 5, what are the changes? Please advise.

Lightroom Classic was introduced long before we had to deal with Covid. The current version is 11 and it is the same as your version 5 except on steroids.

Also in addition Lightroom Classic which operates inside to your computer, Adobe has developed a cloud based version (also confusingly called “Lightroom”) that stores your images in the Adobe cloud. There are apps to access the cloud based Lightroom that runs on your computer and mobile devices like phones and tablets.

You won't recognize LrC version 11 compared to LR5, which was released in 2013. A whole slew of improvements. You won't find LR6 anywhere. Abode does not sell licences anymore. The few that left overs at B&H, etc were bought up long ago.

I think it would be recognizable, but it would be like getting out of a base model automobile and then sitting in the fully loaded, top of the line edition. Most of the familiars, but lots of new features as well.

Thanks for your response Clee . I didn't know how much my Lightroom 5 was out of date. I appreciate your comments and the link to view what's new in Lightroom Classic since Lightroom 6.

Thanks Zenon for your response. Its unfortunate that Adobe doesn't sell licenses anymore for desk top versions of Lightroom. Would this include Classic too? Is it such that an individual such as myself would need all the LR updates before getting LRC or can I just get LRC and go from there? Is LRC for sale by anyone or business?

Thanks Ken for your response. I like your analogy. Sounds like I would still be able to use LRC and would have a few upgrades that might come in handy. Wondering if I might need all the other upgrades from LR5 or can I just get LRC to use? Where can I get LRC? I understand Adobe doesn't sell or support stand alone versions for desk top anymore.

You can just get LRC and go from there. No need to apply all the intermediate updates.

Yes. LRC is only available via subscription, but you may be able to find a "Black Friday" price for a year's subscription at some place like Amazon. It isn't available anywhere for sale.

Thanks for your response Hal and I'm relieved I don't have to get any additional updates before getting LRC. I'll keep an eye out at Amazon for LRC to come up. If you hear of anyone or business selling LRC for Windows, terminal, please let me know, much appreciated.

Just to be clear, LR classic is desktop-based and is the newest successor to LR5 that you are using. You can buy your license from Adobe or from sellers like B&H Photo, for example, but most places are just selling you the license (key) and you then need to download the files (Adobe Creative Cloud is the "controlling" software on your machine that will keep things updated and in order).

As stated you get the CC app. CC is the ecosystem (it's what Adobe calls it) where all the apps are located. You can install all or one of them and they install on your desktop. It's up to you. I think there are about 14 apps available including Portfolio which is a personal website. Portfolio is integrated with LrC and probably Lr as well.

As you can see in the attached file there is LrC and Lr. As people mentioned LrC is the LR% replacement which like your LR5 and requires local file storage. Lr is the new cloud app introduced about 6 years ago. It sends your files to the cloud automatically. I never installed it because I don't have a need for it. It is not recommended to install both LrC and Lr on the desktop but people have found workarounds. Ask first if you want to. Start off with LrC so things are familiar.

Also you will get the latest version of LrC and your should always update to get all the new features - unless your OS is outdated. Some older versions of Mac OS are not compatible but you have the latest Windows. LrC is version 11 now which got an excellent masking upgrade.

Red arrow shows the CC app prompting me to install Lr.

Thanks for the confirmation Ken. Just to confirm, I need to purchase the license key first and the Adobe Creative Cloud is the controlling software for the desk top version as well and not the monthly subscription fee and cloud based version?

There are no more licence keys. You just pay for the plan you want and you will get an install app.

@Zenon is correct. You pay for your subscription and the ACC app "phones home' to handle all software checks (subscription, updates, etc.). I find it easier to install ACC and LR Classic in sequence rather than all at once. This way if something goes wrong, I have less to troubleshoot. But you can do it either way so long as you have both installed in the end.

You can only 'SUBSCRIBE' to the Photography Plan (20GB) and pay the Subscription fee Monthly or Annually, ongoing.
You install the CC Desktop App that Installs Lightroom-Classic for use on your 'desktop' PC or Mac computer.
Only the Photography Plan (20GB) includes Lightroom-Classic , but you also get the 'Mobile' Apps (with the 20GB Cloud storage)
