Lightroom Version Number
10.2
Operating System
  1. Windows 10
I installed Lr 10.2 and DeNoise AI 3.3.
New DeNoise can edit raw file (CR3 for Canon).
From Lr Edit, Preferences, External Editing, there are only three file formats can selected: TIFF, PSD, JPEG.
How to call Denoise from Lr to do noise update using raw file? (CR3)
Or, I have to open DeNoise first, after clean noise, save as JPG file and the open Lr doing further edit?

Well a JPEG would be the last filetype to preserve and DeNoise edits. A Lossless TIFF would be the preferred.

The problem with CR3 files is that they are not RGB. Either DeNoise or Lightroom needs to convert these to RGB before processing. Once processed, the RGB file not the RAW file needs to then be passed to the secondary editor.

I seem to recall a topic recently where several people tested DeNoise before import and after import into Lightroom. I do not recall the consensus of that thread. Perhaps some one of the original participants can provide the link to that thread.

Thank you.
One more question.
What color space should I select from "Additional External Editor"?
There are four options:

ProPhoto RGB
Adobe RGB
Display P3
sRGB

If your external Editor is DeNoise, you need to specify a colorspace that that app will recognize. If it will recognize ProPhotoRGB, then use that as it is the largest gamut but not widely recognized. AdobeRGB is widely accepted and recognized and provides a large envelope. Display P3 is a cinema colorspace that Apple has adopted that has characteristics similar to AdobeRGB. SRGB is the smallest gamut and should be avoided.

Starting with Version 3.xxx (not sure which) Topaz introduced a new "model" for Raw files and they made significant changes to the work flow. Since I usually update it when it prompts me to do so on opening, I did it without seeing without release notes, it passed under my radar (and that of other users if I can judge by the comments on their site).

To use the RAW model, you cannot use it as a plug-in. You must use DeNoise as a stand alone application, open the file outside LR (through show file/directory in Explorer). There is a Youtube video describing the workflow under the new release (the link is probably available on their site - sorry I did not save it). In a nutshell, after you open the file in Explorer and edit it in DeNoise, you must SAVE it AS a DNG file in the same directory, synchronize the directory and the settings in LR, stack the 2 photos and voilà. If it looks complicated, it's because it is.

You can also use DeNoise as a plug-in (here are the instruction to configure it: DeNoise AI v3.3 Lightroom Plugin Update Instructions - Topaz Labs) . It work almost as before, with a major twist. By invoking the external editor, LR generates a TIFF file with all the settings and passes it to Denoise . Unfortunately Denoise as lost the ability to save the modified TIFF created LR and saves it under another name , forcing you to go through the same steps as above plus deleting the intermediate unedited TIFF file. (I looked, there is definitively not a "Save2 option, only a "Save as"). I spent several hours on their site trying to figure it out. I guess they favoured the RAW model (because you cannot save under the original RAW format and must save under a different format - DNG recommended, but strangely enough, it can save them but not read them) and forgot the need of the plug-in mode

My major problem is that RAW files don't open correctly in DeNoise. The colours shift, becoming magenta/pink. It is a known issue, but I cannot use it in that mode until it is fixed. The few times that I managed to open files correctly, The raw mode seem to a very good job.

I don't see any difference to the previous version of DeNoise when using the standard "Edit in...." workflow from Lightroom Classic. The Tiff opens in DeNoise, when I'm happy I hit the "Apply" button and the Tiff is saved back to LrC and stacked with the original.

In case you are looking for a way to find out if DeNoise recognizes ProPhotoRGB: you probably won’t find that info anywhere and you don’t have to. A color-managed application does not have to ‘recognize’ or ‘support’ a specific color space. It gets all the info it needs from the embedded icc-profile. So as long as the correct profile is embedded (and Lightroom always does that) it can work in any color space you can think of. This is as long as we are talking about the RGB color model, of course. The same applies for any other model (such as CMYK), but the application must support a color model. Because Lightroom only exports in the RGB color model anyway, the latter is not relevant here, however.

On my version of DeNoise (3.3.2), the Apply button has been replaced by a "Save" button and when you hit it, a windows opens with the saving options, and not matter what I do, it will create a new file.

I'm also running 3.3.2 on my Windows system, and nothing has changed, i.e. still see the Apply button when I invoke the Lr Plug-in.

I'm running LR C 10.4 and Denoise 3.3.3. Since updating to 3.3 I have noticed no changes in the operation of denoise - the Apply button is still there, there is only one TIF file created.

I somehow skipped 3.3.2, but 3.3.1 and 3.3.1 on Mac Big Sur OS works normally to create and save to TIFF (apply button in DeNoise) for me.

You will see that option, when you open a raw image directly in DeNoise there is also an option to save as DNG. That image will be saved with an extension Raw.DNG, however, it appears as a rendered image if imported to LrC which indicates it's a tiff in a DNG wrapper. See related screen captures.
