Lightroom Version Number
9.2
Operating System
  1. macOS 10.13 High Sierra
  2. iOS
I have a couple of questions and a couple of different categories …..number one I now have a Lightroom classic and I have my photos on the cloud. Downloading them I see that I now have a number of folders but I lost my main folder structure …that is not a problem. But I would like to know is that if I make any changes to my folder structure here in LR Classic, will it be reflected to the cloud and my mobile lightroom on my Ipad?

Number 2. Again referring to Lightroom classic on my desktop ……will I be able to form a new catalog with other photos that I have that are located on my computer now and are not on the cloud? If I can will they go to the cloud or can I just keep the catalog on my computer like the old LR And treat them as a separate catalog? Also, will I loose that folder structure if I import it?

Thanks!!!

No. Classic does not, cannot, sync full-size files UP to the Cloud. You can create Standard Collections of photos and these will sync UP (as Smart Previews) and appear as ALBUMS in Lightroom-mobile. (I guess if you create collections that mirror your folders, then you would have Albums that appear similar to Classic folders.)
will I be able to form a new catalog
Yes, you can create multiple Classic catalogs, but these are the 'rules'-
Only ONE Classic catalog can ever 'Sync' with the Cloud.
The Classic catalog that you Sync (with Sync turned on) will download a copy of EVERY photo you have imported by mobile devices to the Cloud. (you define folder location in Preferences)
A Classic Catalog that is not synced has no connection with Cloud files.

The cloud does not use a folder structure. It follows the Classic model for Collection and calls them “Albums”. Folders have never been a very efficient organization structure and Adobe uses the more efficient method to store images.

How are you downloading these from the cloud? Lightroom Classic does not sync full sized image files to the Adobe Cloud but instead sends proxy files ( called Smart DNGs or Smart Previews) These are suitable for develop processing but are far from the original in size.
Only one catalog can sync with the Adobe cloud. If you create a second catalog it will not be syncing to the cloud unless you specifically request that Lightroom Classic do so.

I’m not sure what you are trying to do. Lightroom Classic does not need to sync to the cloud and there is no need to Use the Lightroom for the Desktop app at all. If you are new to the subscription plan, simply convert your old version catalog file to Lightroom Classic and forget about Lightroom for the Desktop. If you want to share Lightroom Classic images with mobile devices, then sync those and only those.

There is no need to create a new catalog if the purpose of the new catalog is to house images that you don't want uploaded to the cloud. The ONLY images that are uploaded to the cloud by Lightroom Classic are those you specifically tell LrC to do so by adding them to the "All synced Photos" special collection in the Catalog Panel or you place in a normal collection which is marked to sync with the cloud. Therefore witin the same catalog can be images you do want to sync up to the cloud and other images that youd don't want to sync up to the cloud.

Only ONE Classic catalog can ever 'Sync' with the Cloud.

Change the word "ever" to "currently", i.e. only one catalog can be the active syncing catalog, but any catalog can be switched to become the latest active syncing catalog. Though as you say, each time the user switches to a different catalog for syncing purposes, the current cloud contents will be downloaded to that new syncing catalog.

Thanks, Here is where I am at. What I had before was the plan with regular LR and of course the mobile with the 1tb plan. I really wanted the Lightroom classic so I upgraded to the LR Classic and the 1tb plan. So now I have mobile and I also have the Lightroom classic. everything is in the cloud. My mobile is based on a folder structure and Lightroom classic is not. I want to know what happens when I make changes in Lightroom classic that is If I create a folder structure there or if I do edits. How does that affect what I have in the mobile side? And if I create new folders in mobile they will download as regular photos to Lightroom classic without the folder structure?

Folders in the cloud apps are different to folders in Classic. In the cloud, folders are containers for albums, i.e. a folder cannot directly contain images, they can only contain albums. The direct equivalent to cloud folders in Classic is Collection Sets, i.e. the cloud has albums which can be in folders, and Classic has collections which can be in collection sets. However, cloud folders only sync between other cloud apps, they do not sync with Classic, and Classic's collection sets do not sync to the cloud.

But.....the contents of the folders (i.e. albums) and collection sets (i.e. collections) DO sync between the cloud and Classic. So if you create a folder in Mobile which contains albums called Set1 and Set2, there would not be a collection set created in Classic, but collections called Set1 and Set2 would appear. Furthermore, you can manually create a collection set in Classic with the same name as the equivalent folder in Mobile, and manually drag the collections Set1 and Set2 into that collection set. That gives the same appearance in both Classic and the cloud.
And if I create new folders in mobile they will download as regular photos to Lightroom classic without the folder structure?

You can create folders in mobile, but nothing can download to Classic until you add one or more albums to that folder, and those albums will appear as collections in Classic. However, any images that are in those albums would probably already have downloaded to Classic (images do not have to be in albums or collections in order to be synced), so the only thing that would download would be the album information to allow Classic to add the appropriate images to the new synced collection(s) that are created when the album was created.

Excellent, clear explanation. Thanks..

Ok, I have the files in LR Classic and I arranged my collections. All seems to be going well. Thanks.

My next question is this…….If I start a new folder on my phone in mobile (with subfolders), when it syncs with the cloud and then Classic, what will I see In Classic? New collections for the sub folders? Will I then have to arrange them to my liking? Thanks.

Folders and subfolders in Lightroom mobile do not sync to LrC. Only albums do and become collections in LrC.

Just another example of Adobe’s poor choice at naming products and parts of products. Folders as a file system container are not the same as the “folders” that Adobe chose to name the containers for albums As a result confusing continues to reign with Adobe users.

I am hopping onto this thread with a couple related questions, having finally begun figuring out mobile. I synched two collections from Classic, and both appear nicely in my phone and on the web. I have assumed that deleting from the cloud would remove the image from the collection (album) in the cloud as well as on the desktop. I deleted (I think; see below) one, and it now appears in the deleted set but it still also remains in the cloud album in the browser and desktop collection. I can't find a trash can on the phone, but it's there in the album. I assume this may be some kind of synching error, but I stopped and started synching, relaunched LRC, and reloaded the web page. No change. Now I realize there are both "remove" and "delete" options online. I honestly don't know which I did. I'd play some more, but I'm a little paranoid at this point. How is it supposed to work?

Deleting an image in the cloud does not affect the image in the catalog. In the catalog there is a special collection called "All Synched Photographs". All images in the catalog and the cloud will appear here. If you sync a Classic collection, the cataloged image will appear in both this collection and "All Synched Photographs".

If you deleted a photo from the Lightroom (cloudy) "All Photos " section or from an album , it will be placed in the "Deleted" section for 60 days before it is deleted from the Lightroom cloud. "Remove" is only an option for Albums and only applies to the Album. It does not delete images form the "All Synched Photographs" or place an image in the "Deleted" section.

If an image was synched from Classic, deleting from the cloud will only remove the image from the "All Synched Photographs" and/or the synched Collection. I have not checked to see if it remains in those Classic collections until the end of the 60 day period when the image is in the Lightroom (cloudy) "Deleted" section.

Thanks! Except for the odd initial delete that didn't quite happen, this is exactly what I am seeing.

Actually, one more question... The phone app doesn't appear to show the deleted images. Is there a trash can hiding somewhere I can't find?

There is a Deleted section of the Library just above the Albums section.
