Lightroom Version Number
6.1
Operating System
  1. macOS 10.14 Mojave
I'm getting mixed messages. I'd like to try out and likely purchase the Photo package. I have 20K RAW files on my computer and hard drives. What I want to do is continue to edit on my Mac in 90% of situations. My specific questions are:
1. Am I correct in assuming if I download the trial package, it will not affect my current v6.1 at all? And is that true if I buy the new package? In other words, is it possible to have both LRClassic and LR6.1 usable at the same time, understanding that a new catalog will be generated for Classic? I read somewhere that the old version might be automatically updated.
2. The only time I would use LRCC is when traveling and shooting festivals and concerts. There are times I need to edit and publish photos from the road. Can I arrange to ONLY have the relatively few files I take on the road uploaded to CC, and then when I get home I can download them and store them on my computer? I'm not interested in paying for a large amount of cloud space when I likely don't need it at all.
3. When you start the subscription versions, as I understand it, an entirely new catalog is developed and it will include all the files currently in the old catalog regardless of their location (external hard drives, for instance). And I assume the old catalog is left as it was?

Thanks in advance.

LR6 and Lightroom Classic can coexist side by side with separate catalog files. During the trial, Lightroom Classic will read your LR6 catalog file and write out a Lightroom Classic catalog with the same data. The structure if the data base is different and that is why there is a need for an updated catalog file.

Should you opt for the subscription after the trial you will want to uninstall LR6.

With Lightroom Classic you can also use the mobile version called Lightroom (there is no product called CC) To distinguish between older versions like your Lightroom 6, we usually refer to the mobile version by calling it Lightroom (cloudy). The latest version of Lightroom (cloudy) is v4.3.

With the subscription you can sync Lightroom Classic with Lightroom (cloudy) If you designate a collection of your Classic inventory as available to sync, a proxy file will be sent to the Adobe Cloud. for every image in that collection. These proxy files do not count against your subscription plan limits. In theory, it is possible to sync all 20K of your master catalog without using any of the 20GB plan. These proxy files are Smart Previews and have a size limited to 2560px on the long edge. This is suitable for editing on portable devices. And the adjustments made in the field will flow back through the Adobe cloud to your master catalog in Lightroom Classic when ever you have an internet connection.

If in the field you import images to Lightroom (cloudy) these will need to fit inside your plan limits (20GB). These will be full size images and will sync back to the master Lightroom Classic catalog as full size files.

Thanks so much, that's a huge help. Just to clarify.....when the full sized images I upload from the road are synced back to my master catalog on my computer, can I then remove them from cloud storage to preserve space?

Yes, but this needs to be done in the Lightroom Classic Catalog. In the Lightroom Classic Catalog, there is a special collection Called "All Synched Photographs" For every image that is in the catalog there will be a corresponding image in the Adobe Cloud. If these images originated in mobile Lightroom , removing them from this collection will also delete therefrom the Cloud. You need to pay careful attention between Removing (from the cloud) and Deleting from the catalog. The command in Lightroom Classic "All Synched Photographs" context menu is "Remove from All Synched Photographs"

Thank you. I went ahead and downloaded the trial. It was less complicated than I expected. I did realize that Topaz plug-ins, when run on synced photos, don't show up anywhere but after removing them from that category as you suggested, they appear. But after removing them from the synced category, they seem to be stored in a folder buried in a mobile downloads.lr.data file. However, I can't open that file to see the actual photo files. They show up in LRClassic but I can't find the actual file on the the computer which is a problem. Is there some way to direct where synced files end up after being removed from that category where we have access to the actual file? Hope this is making sense.....

MacOS sees that special folder as a ‘package’. Right click on the package in Finder and choose “Show Package contents” from the context menu. Then you can see the folders and image files. This special folder is the default folder. You can change the default folder in Preferences.
