In addition to photography, I've got a larger than average collection of family photographs used for genealogy research that are in various stages of having Keywords added to them. I'd like to clarify what I think is true about Keywords and Synonyms if possible. Please feel free to confirm, deny, affirm or denounce any comments below. ;) In "The Missing FAQ" starting on page 128 it talks about or mentions Synonyms over the next several pages.

I've been very good at keeping them consistent for names, etc, but am wondering if it would be more helpful in the long run to use "Synonyms" for some of the names of people as discussed on page 128. Currently my methodology has been to do this for female individuals:

Full maiden name such as: Anna Catharine Rumboldt
Then add a separate Keyword for her married name: Anna Catharine Scholder

Fine and dandy, I can find her by various names now. If I would simply add the married surname as a part of the primary Keyword -> Synonyms

I can search on "Anna Catharine Rumboldt" find the image or on "Anna Catharine Scholder" still finding the same image, is this correct? (Reducing the number of overall keywords which is a good thing.)

Or obviously any combination of "Rumboldt" and "Scholder" and find it as well?

I've looked at this and that seems to be the case. Just want to know if I'm missing anything as I will be "exporting" this as well. So in that case should I add the full married name instead of simply the surname? This would ensure that the full married name is also written out when exported?

Thanks for your indulgence for simple questions.

Searching is should be no problem. Lightroom will find the image when you search on any of the four words. If you export synonyms as well, then the first example would produce two keywords: “Anna Catharine Rumbolt” and just “Scholder”. You probably don’t want that.

Interesting caveat is that you can only search for the synonym when searching the keywords as shown here.

But if you search via Keyword List is doesn't show any of the Keywords with Cillo as a synonym shown here I only see Adolph Cillo

And not his wife Beatrice, whose Keyword is Beatrice A. Pasnault with Beatrice A. Cillo as the synonym.

Not the behavior I was hoping for, but can live with it now that I know that the Keyword List when filtered doesn't include any synonyms.

But if I put it in the actual Keyword Name, then it does show up.

Just interesting behavior on searching.

Happy Holiday's to all!!

I suggest that you try the AnyTag plugin by John R. Ellis. It does full search of terms and synonyms.

Also please add your support for this and other improvements to the built in keyword tools here: Better Keyword Management

My problem is that I have multiple females with the same name:

Person #1:
Birth Name = Kathy Jones
Married Name = Kathy Greenslade

Person #2:
Birth Name = Kathy Zimmerman
Married Name = Kathy Greenslade

How do I handle this?

Currently I decided to make Person #1 keyword "Kathy Greenslade" with a synonym of "Jones", but when I went to do enter Person #2- it said I "cannot have to identical keywords".

If you structure the Keywords as a hierarchy, you can have the same keyword but used with a different Parent

Kathy Jones
…..Kathy Greenslade
Kathy Zimmerman
…..Kathy Greenslade

Keyword phrases and the Adobe treatment of Keywords is weak and the ITPC Keyword description field leave a lot to be desired. Especially when it comes to peoples names.

There is nothing wrong with having a person name Kathy Greenslade and assigning that keyword phrase to both people.

If I have a spider called “Orchard Spider”. I will have only one keyword Phrase and will apply that to every photo of every Orchard Spider even though these individuals are different from locale to locale and from month to month.
