Hi all,

I have read some topics regarding syncing but have another or more specific question.

I am using Classic basically for all my projects and editing and I have used LR CC so far mainly for showing pictures when not at home or for sharing by making synced collections. I am using synced collections quite much also for syncing to Adobe portfolio but I have so far not used CC for any editing because until now I syc or publish only final images or projects.

First question:
If I do some first editing for a project and make a synced collection for it, will I then be able to further edit the images in CC on a laptop or my iPad pro so that these edits are synced back to Classic. This is the most important thing for me to know because if the edits are not synced back to classic then its no point doing it.

Second question:
In case the CC edits are synced back to Classic as described above, what would happen if I take a picture out of LR CC when not at home into an external editor such as Photoshop or Luminar? Will the edited image go back into CC on the Laptop and will this externally edited image then also sync back to classic?

If the above is possible then I would have some nice possibilities to change my workflow when I am not at home on classic.

Regards,
Tom

Thanks a lot for your answer, yes to the first questions is already great news.

Regarding second one, I guess this is not possible then with any external programs like PS or Luminar because I will not have any original files available from a synced collection.

Regards,
Tom

If I remember correctly, then the answer to the second question is that you can do this, but the image that is opened in Photoshop will be the size of a smart preview, i.e. 2560 pixels wide.

Yep. There's a warning message saying the original file wasn't available and couldn't be downloaded, then gives an option to proceed using only the Smart Preview.

In regards to first question, Edits to the look of the image sync back and forth as indicated in this thread. However, only SOME metadata does. The killer is that Keywords do not. Star ratings, titles, captions and the like do - but not keywords.

Thanks Johan / Jim for that very useful information.

If I choose to edit the smart preview, how will this affect the syncing or the smart preview file back to classic? Or will this edited smart preview sync back to classic at all and what will then happen with the original file?

I just want to understand this correctly before I do this.

Regards,
Tom

Nothing happens with the smart preview, because you only sent a copy of it to Photoshop. The image in Photoshop will be saved back to Lightroom, and so it will sync down to Lightroom Classic as a new image.

Perfect, thanks a lot.

I think the situation is more complex. I am on my iPad and I can access the original RAW from LR on my iPad. It has an option to Open in Photoshop, (PS on the iPad). You probably meant on your laptop.

I don’t think LR (cloudy) on a laptop could automatically round trip to an external, i have to look more if there is any scenario where the Laptop gets the full NEF (RAW)

The original poster is asking about images that have been synced to cloud storage from Lightroom Classic on their computer and smart previews would be in cloud storage so that is what is available to his iPad.
If an original image is synced to the cloud storage then the original file is available to the mobile devices and in Lr , and LrC on the computer.
