Hi, I’m trying to figure out how to achieve the following workflow and wondered if any of you can help?
  1. Import RAW files to Lightroom, rename and copy to relevant folder
  2. Preview images and apply a rating to the best shots
  3. Use an external RAW editor to convert the rated images to Tiffs
  4. Import the Tiffs back into Lightroom
The bit I’m struggling with is locating the rated images that I can then process in the external editor. I can’t export from Lightroom as that would require the images to be converted to a non-RAW format. I can’t seem to copy the RAW files of the selected images to a different folder that I can subsequently find from the external editor.

Thoughts appreciated!

Hi,

I have already proposed a Lightroom script allowing to directly send a RAW file from LR to another RAW processing program. Please see this thread :

If you still prefer using the Lightroom catalog...

It describes the operations for Capture One but you can easily adapt to another software.

The only thing that the script doesn't do is to automatically import the TIFF file after development in the external software. But you can do that by synchonizing the folder.

Alternative steps you could follow:
  1. Import RAW files to Lightroom, rename and copy to relevant folder
  2. Preview images and apply a rating to the best shots
  3. Rightclick and choose 'Edit in Photoshop'
  4. Close Photoshop, it wil ask you to save the edits in Lightroom. Choose Yes
  5. A Tiff copy of you image wil appear in Lightroom, including the ratings you applied

Question: why would you want to use a different raw editor and break the raw workflow by creating tiff copies of all your images?

Thanks I’ll check it out!

Thanks but I want to use Canon’s DPP to do the raw conversion for me.

Personal choice I guess. I want to use Canon’s DPP software to carry out the conversion for me as I find it gives a better starting point from which to develop the images as well as being able to apply superior lens corrections compared to Lightroom.

See my OpenDirectly plugin - it opens the file in whatever external editor you choose.

I recently bought a new camera, ( Canon EOS 90D) and discovered lightroom will not see or recognize this camera's CR3 files. What can I do?

I have Lightroom 5.7 running on macOS Mojave version 10.14.6

Thank you

Either upgrade to Lightroom Classic, or download the free Adobe DNG Converter. With that app you can convert the CR3 files to DNG, which will open in older versions of Lightroom.

Thank you, Johan just downloaded Adobe DNG Converter!
