Some time ago my LR external hard drive's index became corrupted*. When I had the images professionally retrieved all of the virtual images, keywords, ratings, folder names, etc. were missing, although EXIF info such as settings remain with each image. The original folder names are still visible, but grayed out and marked with a "?" in LR. Most images are visible, but with a "!" indicating that the image cannot be found.
I would like to replicate the Develop settings that I had applied to several virtual images. I can see these grayed out settings when I open a lost virtual image in Develop mode. Is there some way to replicate these previously applied changes other than making a list and trying to duplicate each step?

*Yes, the ex hd was backed up, but due to auto-backups completed prior to the problem being discovered, all of my backup hard drives duplicated the error!

The ? And ! In Lightroom is telling you that the images and folders are no longer located in the path where they were when imported into Lightroom If your restored disk drive is in the same folder and file path as the original, then to need to right click on the topmost missing folder and navigate to the new location for that folder. Repeat for other missing folders if needed and if the image files are no longer in the folder path expected, then you will need to use the “find missing file” function to locate them in the new location.

All of your previous Lightroom edits keywords and adjustment are in your massager catalog. You should be working form that master catalog or a backup of that catalog. If your master catalog was on the corrupted disk, you need to recover it too or use a recent catalog backup

Clee, thank you, I wish it were that simple, but my restored disk drive is not in the same folder and file path as the original. The company that retrieved the images said that information was lost. The restored images are located in files by date rather than geographically as I originally stored them. If I attempt to "find original" I am met with the "not the same name" message and if I confirm it is the image, I get a message that it is associated with another file in the LR catalog.

If you reimported the images (causing the message associated with another file in the catalog) that was the wrong approach. NEVER reimport.

You need to start with the latest catalog before you reimported. Only then can you hope to delink the files cataloged with the files recovered.

I take it from your extensive efforts that you had no system backup available to restore from when you’re Disk drive crashed.

I am sorry that you have to follow this difficult path to learn the lessons of making proper system backup. Insteps of mirroring one disk onto another.

Actually the ex hd was backed up, but due to auto-backups completed prior to the problem being discovered, all of my backup hard drives duplicated the corrupted files. As a result I no longer use pre-scheduled backups.
what do you recommend for a backup system?

A system backup will allow versioning permitting you to go back to a point in time where the data was backed up correctly. What you have apparently done is used some sort of mirroring app that mirrors what is on one disk with an exact copy on another. TimeMachine is a system backup. All Mac users should use that as the first resort on their computers. It is free with the OS. I backup all of my volumes with TimeMachine. I alternate backups to a TimeCapsule and an EHD . This way I have two recent backups on two separate pieces of hardware. In addition to TimeMachine I also use Acronis to back up my most critical data on an additional EHD.
With Time Machine, I can recover any file or group of files from any day in the last week, any week from the last month and every month until the backup disk fills and the folders months drop off. I can recover similarly with Acronis.

You're correct, Clee, I use a mirroring app. I was unaware that Time Machine could be used for files stored exclusively on ex hds. I'll take another look at TM and will google Acronis which I don't know at all. Thanks for all your time!

By default EHDs are omitted from the TimeMachine file and folder list. Your destination target drive needs to be large enough to accommodate all of the files on all of the drives to be backed up.

How were your folders and files named? If it was a nice simple system that could be recreated using metadata contained in the file (like a date based folder structure and filename), it might be possible to put all the files back where Lightroom was expecting to find them. Trying to do so with camera filenames or topic-based folder names is a nightmare though.
