Hi

Is it correct that images synced from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom CC do NOT count against your Creative Cloud storage?
If yes - does that mean I could sync my entire catalog without exceeding my cloud qouta?

But just be aware that when you sync images from Classic to the cloud, only Smart Previews of those images are uploaded (which is why they're "free"). SPs are plenty good enough for most "mobile" purposes, but maybe not all.

Thanks Jim, I did know that.
I think it's quite wild that we get this "free" space. I imagine it could occupy quite a lot of space if your catalog is huge.

Also it my well be noted that any images imported via Lightroom (Cloudy) (iPhone, iPad etc.) will be sync'd back to Lightroom Classic and will be full-size AND will count against your 20GB/1TB subscripition limits

How big are these Smart Previews compared to the "full-sized" image approximately?

They will vary depending upon the image content. The correct term for these proxy files os Smart DNG. They are compressed (maybe lossy compression) DNG files and will be limited on the long edge to 2560pixels. They are suitable for working on in the web and mobile apps and are suitable for display on the Web.

Their size is irrelevant to the Classic subscriber in that none of the 20GB cloud storage is used. These are used in Lightroom Mobile apps in lieu of a full size local image. You can download full-size images to Lightroom Mobile apps if you have the storage space or need a full size file to email or export.

They are always 2540 pixels on the longest edge. You can work out how that compares with your originals.

Interesting. When I Googled "smart preview size," I found two references to 2540, one to 2550, and didn't see any for 2560. I should know better than to trust the web.

I misremembered it as 2048 until Jim corrected me. 2048 is a factor of 2 to 11th. 2560 is 2 to the 8th X10

The reason why I ask is that by storing your all photos online you could use this as a backup, with somewhat workable file sizes.

Since these are not RAW or full size originals, they are not considered a backup.. They could be considered a desperate attempt to recover something if your original and backups got destroyed.

You can store originals in the cloud if you use Lightroom cloudy but you need a plan with at least 1TB to make that work.

Agree!
Backup was maybe not the right word, or maybe "Backup Light" - at least you have somewhat viewable copies of your photos stored in the cloud.

“Backup Light” = “desperate attempt “

Certainly not a recommendation to replace a dedicated system backup app.

I do absolutely not recommend this as your main backup.
A complement to your backup where you quickly can log in and view your photos online, hence "Backup Light".
