Over many years, myself and others in this forum have repeatedly made requests for improvements to LR Classic - many of which are for the Library Module. Most of these requests have been ignored by Adobe, only to re-requested over and over as new users start using LR Classic and stumble upon the same shortcomings.

I have been keeping a running list of the what I consider the most pressing of these requests. this is by no means an exhaustive list and other people may have their own most important list but even so, I thought I'd share my list. You can find it here

Posting your most important ones so others can consider them and vote is not a bad idea, but I’m not sure “ignored by Adobe” is entirely fair. It’s absolutely true, they do prioritise to pick off the ones that will help the largest number of people. We can influence that prioritisation by voting on the requests. Many of your essential requests have hardly mustered any votes in the years the requests have been live. It’s easy to say that most people don’t know about the site, so they haven’t been able to vote, but the percentage of people who do vote does give them a reasonable idea of how popular an idea might be.

If anyone else has must-have requests, feel free to post them too, then we can all consider how high a priority they would be to us, and vote accordingly. Likewise, if you find multiple threads requesting the same thing, and I’ll merge them so their votes are combined. The moderators do try to keep an eye open for repeats, but some will get missed.

Almost two years ago now, I polled various members and the result was a Top Ten Bugs list. See Top Ten Bugs list - latest status and The VOTE for the TOP TEN bugs.

I'm really happy that Califdan has posted his list. I hope that others do.

Yes, I know that we have no official status with Adobe, but collectively we have some very smart, very experienced Lightroom users. And we have some members who enjoy some sort of relationship with Adobe, because they are under Non Disclosure Agreement regarding Adobe's future plans. I have always hoped that those members will find a way to bring those ideas to Adobe's attention.

I'm a fairly unsophistcated Lightroom user with a few years experience of the product.
I read through Califdan's list of suggested enhancements with interest. Some I actually didn't understand, and none of them would rank high on my list of desirable enhancements. This is not to denigrate the list at all, just to put me in a different class of user.

From Adobe's point of view, I doubt whether a lack those changes would cause a dedicated subscriber to jump ship to another product, still less attract a brand new customer. Of course, I don't know how Adobe manages its enhancements programme, but retention of existing customers and attracting new ones must be the name of the game.

The problem with feature requests is that you will always think that your own feature request is the most important of all, and the most obvious of all time. It is incredible that Adobe has not placed your request at the very top of their priority list. Which clearly proves that Adobe is not listening to their customers. And if your request got only six votes in five years or so, then that is not because other people are not particularly interested in it, but simply because they did not realise you posted it so they didn’t go there to vote. What else could it be?

I know because that is also how I feel when one of my own brilliant ideas does not get picked up by Adobe. How stupid do they get over there? Can’t they even read between the lines of those six votes, and see the hundreds of other votes this request would have if they would only go out and ask people? I am also a member of this forum, so any request I post should be seen as a request made on behalf of all the people on this forum! No, I didn’t ask them, but I don’t have to. Of course they agree!

OK, I am exaggerating, of course, but this is a natural feeling. It is logical that you think that something that annoys you every time you use Lightroom, must annoy everybody else who uses Lightroom. So if your request is not honored, despite those six votes, then there must be people at Adobe not doing their jobs. There is no other explanation.

Hi Califdan,
From a photographer's point of view, I think displaying the focus point would be very useful. I know there is a plug-in (and I use it) but it has not been updated for years and does not recognize recent bodies.

And there’s the reason some suggestions go unheeded. The focus point data lies inside the block field of manufacturers data. The contents of this field vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. Implementing this for one camera model would be trivial. Doing it for more than just Nikon and Canon becomes monumental. And having to maintain the function for every new model would be an ongoing issue with more complexity than just keeping up with the proprietary RAW formats.
Even the developers of the plug in could not maintain the plugin or even add to the limited number of camera makes currently supported.

Move aside everyone. My Noise Reduction AI (Sensei) is the most important request out there :)

I agree that this would be an important Where is the request and I will support you (if I haven’t already)

For some reason (on two machines) Adobe presents me with a login page and immediately switches to as page that says I am logged in and aske me to close the window. When I do the feedback post disappears and I am not logged into Adobe either.
That single sign on is fussy. Safari usually works pretty well, but I have a (free) Get Satisfaction login set to use the same email address, and that usually works better for me.

Johan,

Speaking in terms of my "day job," which is software product management, it is a real challenge to sort out feature requests and decide which are "representative" of the larger community of users, and which are not. In fact, I can say with reasonable confidence that only a small or maybe even a tiny minority of Lightroom users actually submit feature requests to Adobe on their forum. Or even know about their forum. And there is not just one "community," there are many. We see the existence of many communities right here in this forum, as indicated by the way that people rate their Lightroom experience, and the kinds of questions that are posted.

It just occurred to me that Adobe has never done any sort of "mass communications" to the user base announcing the existence of the forum, at least not since I started to use Lightroom about 2014. However, Adobe can't be relying just on the feature requests from the user forum. I don't read that forum too much, but I can't imagine that someone would say, " Adobe, please create a cloud-based product, and make sure that product is not compatible with the current desktop product. And moreover, please make it complicated and difficult to use the two together."

I have absolutely no specific knowledge (despite living only 20 miles from Adobe's headquarters) of the details of their product management process and their market research methods, but Lightroom is a big and profitable enough product that Adobe must be spending serious amounts of money on various forms of market research, comprising one-on-one interviews, focus groups, surveys, usability studies and direct observation of how users work with Lightroom, "customer journey" mapping, demographic analysis, etc. Again, I have no specific knowledge here. And that would be in addition to overall market size and trend analysis, and competitive analysis. And then there is always the "technological imperative." "If we can build it, we should build it." Lightroom cloudy came about as a result of work in all those areas, and possibly some that I haven't mentioned.

All that said, I'm not going to argue that, "Adobe knows best." Clearly their announcement of Lightroom cloudy two years ago was not done well.

Like it or not, the forum requests are probably only a small piece of the overall picture for Adobe when it comes time to plan new features. That doesn't mean that we in this forum shouldn't try to influence their thinking.\

I don’t really ever expect to see that request but one can hope. It is one of the top gripes in forum land. Topaz is getting into this pretty heavily but like anything 3rd party is another step. Same as PS which I try and avoid.

Not sure how they would even do that with parametric developer.

for the last several days. I have been unable to get through the login process on both a Mac and an iPadPro. A login panel opens, when I choose my Photoshop Login, a screen opens with suggestions for two different login emails (both mine) Before I can select either one, the screen immediately goes away and is replace with another screen that shays I have successfully logged in (But I haven't!) returning to the feedback forum it shows as not logged in. I was finally able to login using Opera as a browser. I turned of the Auto login process in Safari Preferences and removed my Adobe Login Credentials for the Mac login vault. Nothing gets beyond the logon screen. I think this might be related to Catalina and Catalina updates to Safari. It might be a Safari problem or it could be that Adobe is not catching the Catalina/Safari security changes. Because I get the Adobe message that my login was successful but my credentials are not retained. Where do you go to report this problem at Adobe?

In recent days, I have been presented with a Login requirement on both my desktop and laptop. However I have been using Lightroom (different versions) on both these systems, and none other, for years now. And so i log in again, and then I can use Lightroom without a login, until I can't. It's not a feature, it's a bug.

Of course they are only a small piece. Adobe does talk to photographers about how they use Lightroom, for example (even if you are not among that group). And no doubt they have other sources of information too, for example Lightroom sending anonymous feedback on features being used of not used. All I was saying is: I'm getting a bit tired of constantly hearing this "Adobe doesn't listen to their customers". The fact that some feature request that happens to be important to you personally does not get honoured is no proof of this at all. Especially not if one look at the number of votes tells you that even among people who do know the forums hardly anybody voted for it.

If Adobe constantly ignored the wishes of their customers, there wouldn't be many customers left by now. They must be doing something right.

I am going to vote for all proposals that I like in your wish list.

Johan,

I think we are in strong agreement. And no, I'm not one of the photographers that Adobe talks with.

The common question is, "Who, exactly, is the customer?" Putting aside professional vs. amateur, the size of the camera market and now the ubiquity of cameras in smartphones, means that the real question is, "Who are the various different customer types?" In other words , a description of the customer in terms of needs and wants relative to the problem that Adobe is trying to solve. No one of us is THE customer. The balancing act for Adobe is to decide which customer types to serve (or not serve) with a given product, and then provide something valuable for each customer type with a new release.

I suspect that Adobe decided that when they planned out Lightroom cloudy, they concluded that the needs of the target customer type for cloudy was different enough, that a separate product would be better. (That's independent of any engineering decision on separate or combined sets of software code.)

So to tie all this together, what Johan is saying is that some people assume that all Lightroom users are just like them. Which of course is not true.

Phil
