I currently run LR 6.13 and over the past year when I check for upgrades am told that I am up to date. I learn today that they are up to version 8.
Have I missed something?

Version 6.14 is the last version that can be purchased to own. The later versions of LR are now part of the Creative Cloud umbrella at Adobe and are only available on a subscription basis. There is LR CC Classic which is the newer version of what you are using and there is LR CC which is a new program that is designed for a more mobile work flow.

Yes you have missed something. LR 6.x were the last versions you could buy as a perpetual license (PL) where you pay a wad of money and then use the software as long as it still runs. Adobe has since stopped support of the LR 6.x versions. Adobe replaced these PL versions with a rental model which were originally called LR CC with a date e.g LR CC 2017. These were more or less the same as LR6 versions. Starting with LR7 the renamed again, still rental, but are now called "Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC" or just "Classic" for short. These are now up to version 8.x

The reason your "Update" button did not notify you of this is because there was no real update to the Perpetual License product. It was a whole new thing with a whole new licensing model that just happened to look just like LR6.

So, there you are. If you want to come up to being current go to the Adobe site and look for Lightroom Classic. You'll pay $10 per month and will getmonthly updates if you desire (either automatically or by clicking a button). At some point they will go to LR 9 (hopefully) which may require a fresh install and catalog conversion rather than a simple update.
