Starting on November 30, 2018, Map view will no longer be supported on these versions. This will not be fixed as these versions are no longer supported by Adobe. When you go to the Map module after this date, the screen will appear blank and will not show any map view.

Map is no longer supported in this version of Lightroom

This isn't good.

That s...s :-( ! I upgraded from LR5 to LR6 just for the map support... If they could just release a final version without a map module, and go back to the old way of working where clicking on the coordinates would open the link in your browser, I would be happy - but I guess that's not going to happen.

"where clicking on the coordinates would open the link in your browser "

Hold down Alt or Option when you click the little arrow to the right of the GPS coordinates.

Ah, I didn't know that trick :). Unfortunately, on my system that only opens a 'blank' Yahoo search page...

P.S. Do you think Adobe know this ;-) ?

Workaround

To see the location of an image on a map, copy the coordinates from the GPS field in the Metadata panel located at the right in the Map module. Then, search for these coordinates on the Internet.

Yes, I had said to someone that the tech note looked like it had been written by a LR newbie!

Until you posted, I did not know that Yahoo had a Mapping service. Google Maps licensed by Adobe is probably the most widely used web mapping service. Why not use it?

Adobe does use Google Maps for the Map module and reverse geocoding.

I seem to remember that Alt/Opt clicking the GPS field arrow may have called Yahoo's mapping page at some point, but on my system in 6 and Classic it launches Google Maps in the browser.

Likely just launches a browser link. This then depends on the OS to launch the browser, and which map depends on browser settings.

I agree th at "this isn't good" as far as LR 6 is concerned. LR 6 was the currently marketed and sold version until LR 7 was announced only last October.

I get it that Adobe is selling LR 7 only as a subscription, and I get it that Adobe wants everyone to migrate from earlier versions to LR 7. I can understand why Adobe won't fix the problem on LR 4 and 5, since LR 6 was announced in 2015, over three years ago now. It is entirely reasonable to discontinue support three years after a version is no longer sold.

However, however, it is really cheesy for Adobe to discontinue support on a professional/prosumer level product only a year after ending sales. Yes, I'm "shouting" because it is the kind of behavior one expects from small and start-up companies, not well established companies with a large customer base. Shame on Adobe.

Another point about the tech note is that the writer neglected to say that Map will no longer be supported in Lr6 and earlier because of API changes made by Google.

@johnbeardy, on which OS is that?

From Jeffrey Friedl's blog (Accessing Yahoo! Maps from Adobe Lightroom), it appears in early versions of LR the GPS arrow on its own launched a Google Maps link, whereas with Alt/Opt it would launch a Yahoo Maps link. Jeffrey also has a plugin (of course :) - Jeffrey's "Geoencoding Support" Plugin for Lightroom) which will add lots of GPS / map related goodies.

LR 6.14 on my Win10 system will only launch the link when I use the Alt key, and that is always a Yahoo Maps link, e.g.
Code:
http://maps.yahoo.com/index.php#lat=27.75080556&lon=-15.57089444
Apparently Yahoo Maps URL's have changed, which means this link no longer opens a Yahoo map... The browser merely attempts to show the link, but does not choose the map for you.

On both my Mac and Windows 10 systems, Google Maps is opened when I use Alt/Opt.

Found the issue... I'm running LR on Windows in a VM, and VirtualBox interferes with my Alt keys :-|. But using the on-screen keyboard, I found that left-Alt gives you a Google Maps link, right-Alt a Yahoo Maps link.

OK, on Windows 10 a simple Alt click goes to Google Maps, a Ctrl+Alt click calls Yahoo. I've not tested on Mac but I would suspect Cmd+Opt click goes to Yahoo, for what little that is worth!

Adobe has always ended updates for legacy apps whenever a new version is released. I think it was extremely generous of Adobe to provide new camera support in LR6 (LR6.14) after LR7.x was released. This was an exception to prior policy. They were very clear that LR6.14 would be the final update to the LR6 series. AFAIK, Adobe continues to sell LR6.14. LR6.14 still has all of the functionality that came with it. However, Google has retired the map API that LR6 depends upon to work. It is unreasonable to expect a vendor to devote resources to a legacy product.

Cletus,

And this point is where we have to disagree, respectfully of course. If we were talking about a $50 consumer product, I would agree with you. But LR 6 cost about $150. I'm not sure where the cutoff should be, but it is certainly more than one year. I also believe that Adobe should have provided a discount for LR 6 customers upgrading to LR 7. That was also cheesy.

Adobe has incredible brand strength, a large installed base, and relatively weak combination. So they can write their own rules, and then praise themselves for that.

For all newcomers to the forum, we beat these issues to death last year. But to be clear, I'm not trying to open old wounds.

LR6.0 was released April 21, 2015. LR5 was released in 2013 and support was discontinued with the release of LR6.x about 22 month later. With the release of LR6 was LRCC2015 a subscription model with a clear indication that the subscription model would be the future direction of the product and all future enhancement went into LRCC2015. LR6 was supported with camera updates and bug fixes until Dec 2017 (32 months after it was released.).
That $10/mo. subscription might be the discount to loyal customers. I don't think Adobe can or should hold this price point forever.

Cletus,

Was there some sort of "statement of direction" to indicate that end-of-life support would be differnet for LR 6 than prior versions? If not, you can't expect customers to divine a change in pricing strategy.

The "statement of direction". was made when Adobe announced that LR6 would be the last perpetual version of LR Support for legacy versions ends the the next version is released. LR5 was supported for 22 months. LR6 was supported for 32. I think Adobe was generous to continue to provide update support for LR6 after LR7 was released. It should not need to be clearer than it is.

I still don't understand why you think end of life was any different from 6 than prior versions, with the exception it was somewhat more generous with two releases after 7.0 came out.

One can complain about the switch to subscription of course, but the loss of support for prior versions has always been policy, and is typical of the industry.

See my post on Jun 15, 2016: Map view not available in the Map module? (LR 4.xxx).
And my workaround post with 'GeoSetter', posted in the same threat at 21 Juli, 2018.
With regards, Martin.
P.S. The Alt-Click on GPS-data in the META-data 'trick' still works in LR 4.xxx
