Defrag SSD holding my LR catalog??

My SSD is getting a bit full. I do run the LR cat optimizer. Is there any pros or cons of also running the Windows defrag on this drive? I do delete pics and wonder if that is freeing up space...or not. etc. thanks for any help

Defragmentation a SSD is not necessary and it will only cause unnecessary R/W cycles to the memory. Defragmentation only helps for spinning hard drives to remove rotational delay when accessing files. As there is no rotational delay on a SSD no help.

Running the catalog optimizer on the other hand never hurts.

If you SSD is also your main system boot drive then you also want to keep a good amount of free space for OS operations.

I know I am a ludite...but I am thus assuming that Windows is taking care of this. Is that correct? (I can't fine Optimize Drives....or other shown pages) But, if Windows 7 is taking care of it I am fine to move on!!

One more question. My remote SSD (which I use for LR) is beginning to fill up. Should I allow the system to "compress files"? Please note that I move this drive to another desktop for the summer. Is that a problem? Is compressing worth any downsides?

I don't remember if Windows 7 does this automatically. but I'm certain that Win8 and Win10 do this housekeeping automatically.

Disk drives filling up will impact performance. Lightroom and apps like it require lots of free space for temporary files. I recommend 100GB on the primary drive (C:\). Fragmented files will not make that much difference. Emptying trash and other housekeeping choose will free up space. Simply emptying the downloads folder can help. As will removing old programs and other unnecessary data files. You can let the system compress files for more space, but when these files are required, the OS will have to uncompress them before using. This will slow the system down.

You have several options.

1. Get a second drive, preferably 1 TB or more, and offload all "data" including photos to this drive.
2. Clear out "junk" and "temp" files. The free version of this program is highly recommended. Download CCleaner | Clean, optimize & tune up your PC, free!
3. Remove unnecessary applications.
4. Buy a bigger SSD.
