Lightroom not reading XMP?

I moved a number of files, including the XMP files. I am now missing collection, virtual copy, and other data that should have traveled with the XMP file. I just cannot get LR to properly read the XMP files.

Any ideas? I've tried synchronizing the folder, but it doesn't help.

Have you considered that collection and virtual copy information is never in xmp ?

Did not know that. Where is that info stored? And how do I recover it? Some of the moved folders have all of their data, collection, virtual copy, all of it. Some do not.

Would appreciate any help.

All information collected for an image resides in the LR catalog. Some of the information about your image can be shared through the XMP section of a Public file like DNG, TIFF or JPG. or in a separate XMP file for Proprietary RAW files. Things like Collections and virtual copy is information specific to the catalog so it makes no sense to store it in a XMP file because only LR catalogs can make use of it. The mechanism for sharing images between LR catalogs is the "Export as Catalog"/"Import from Another Catalog" functions. So, Create an Export Catalog from the catalog containing your virtual copies and collections. Then, import that catalog into your target catalog.

I store my photos on external hard drives. Because I often find myself taking a photo into Photoshop for additional work, for many images, I end up with not only the original NEF files, but DNGs, TIFFs, etc, that have been altered in Photoshop. And that means the drives fill up.

I was trying to move a folder of images from an almost full drive to an almost empty drive. I know this should be done within Lightroom, but Lightroom crashed on three successive attempts, resulting in a system message, "Lightroom is not responding," along with a progress meter that did not move for several hours. (Lightroom crashing only began with this newest release.)

Out of frustration, I decided to move the files via Finder, thinking I could simply tell LR where the photos had been moved to.

Not so simple. Some photos were able to find their collection, virtual copy, and other such data with no problem. But there are many that just can't find it. A couple can't seem to locate the photos, even though I've told LR where they are. I have one folder that LR indicates only contains 12 photos, while according to Finder, there are 103. But it if I try to import those photos, LR tells me there are no new photos to import.

And that's the problem.
