If you’ve been following Adobe’s release notes recently, you may have noticed something a little unusual. Camera Raw is now receiving updates every month, while the Lightroom apps continue on their regular two-month-ish release schedule.

That means you’ll sometimes see exciting new editing features announced for Camera Raw weeks—or even months—before they arrive in Lightroom. Naturally, that raises the question… why?

How Camera Raw and Lightroom Work Together 

Although Camera Raw and Lightroom are different applications, they share the same editing engine. New editing features—such as AI tools, masking improvements, and new adjustment controls—are developed in Camera Raw before being adopted by the Lightroom apps.

Think of Camera Raw as Adobe’s workshop for new editing features. Once those tools are ready, the Lightroom team integrates them into Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Mobile, and Lightroom on the web.

Why Camera Raw can move faster

Camera Raw has a much narrower role. It focuses almost entirely on developing and editing photos inside Photoshop and Bridge.

Lightroom, on the other hand, has a lot more moving parts. Along with photo editing, Adobe also has to consider:

• Catalog management in Lightroom Classic
• Easier batch editing
• Cloud syncing

• Import and export workflows

Because there are more pieces that all need to work together, Lightroom releases naturally take longer to prepare.

Does every Camera Raw feature come to Lightroom?

Usually—but not always.

Adobe’s intention is for editing features developed in Camera Raw to eventually make their way into Lightroom. However, there’s no guarantee every feature will appear in the very next Lightroom release.

Sometimes a feature needs additional work before it fits naturally into Lightroom’s workflow. Occasionally, Adobe may decide a feature isn’t the right fit for Lightroom at all.

What about new cameras and lenses?

Monthly Camera Raw releases also bring support for newly released cameras and lenses.

Support for newly released cameras and lenses often arrives in Camera Raw first. Lightroom users typically receive that same support in the next scheduled Lightroom release.

What does this mean for Lightroom users? 

Even if you never use Camera Raw, understanding its release schedule helps explain why some editing features appear there before they arrive in Lightroom.

Just remember that “coming to Camera Raw” doesn’t necessarily mean “arriving in the next Lightroom release.”

Camera Raw’s monthly updates mean Adobe can introduce new editing technology sooner, while giving the Lightroom team time to integrate those features into the Lightroom apps.

So the next time you spot an exciting Camera Raw feature that isn’t yet available in Lightroom, don’t panic—you haven’t missed an update. Camera Raw is simply leading the way, giving Adobe the opportunity to develop and refine new editing tools before bringing many of them to the Lightroom apps.
