Hi Cornelia, oh I didn't notice that I hadn't mentioned the previews, thanks! Yes, should be able to copy them over to the new computer. Or just set a chunk running overnight. I'm not sure why it's stalling though - I'd probably try optimizing the catalog, see if that helps.

Hi Victoria,

As you do not mention the previews (Folder Previews.lrdata) I assume you suggest that the new computer should create them itself ?
Is there an easy way to trigger that on the new computer so that it will run some days&nights to complete that for a biggish catalog?
When I try the "Library Menu - Previews - Render Standard-sized previews" it takes a long time scanning for existing previews, and it stalls at some point.
So I have tried smaller portions.
I guess the stalling might be due to some corrupted files on my NAS?
I had to recover some of them a while ago and now they have funny file names, but otherwise seem ok when accessing them directly from both the old and the new catalog, so I do not understand why there should be problems in scanning them for previews.

Are previews dependant on OS? Or could I think of using file synch software to move my 85 GB of previews over to the new computer (which is Win7-64 bit, the old one was 32 bit) ?

Thanks, Cornelia

Hi Maureen, try opening Lightroom 3 and go to File menu > Open Catalog and navigate to it that way. I think the Lightroom 4 beta has just changed the file associations, so it's trying to open any Lightroom catalogs into LR4beta. No big problem, so don't worry too much about that. I can talk you through how to fix the associations, but it's not likely to cause you a problem once you've done this first step.

Hello Victoria-

I am trying to transfer lightroom 3 from an old computer ( windows vista) that has one foot in the grave to a new computer (windows 7). I used option 1. When I go in through the pictures folder to the lightroom folder and then click on Lightroom 3 Catalog, I get this error message: "The Lightroom catalog named Lightroom 3 Catalog cannot be opened because it is from an earlier version of Lightroom. Would you like to select a different catalog.". I then have the option of 1. Choose a different catalog or 2. Exit. HELP! If it makes any difference, I did download the lightroom 4 beta program on the old computer, and also downloaded it onto the new computer.

Hey Rob, that's no trouble. Each update/trial version that's available for download from the Adobe website is the full program installation, so you can use that to install and then type in your serial number. Just download the latest version.
